Checking UJ wear.

At the moment I have the swingarm out of my 99 Cali EV to give it a coat of paint and since it's out I was wondering if there's any way to check for UJ wear. I'm reluctant to remove it as it seems to be in there quite securely and to be honest I have no real reason to suspect wear other than the fact the bike has done over 55,000 miles and I don't know if it's ever been changed. It hasn't made any sort of noise that I've heard, I can't feel any backlash in it and from what I can see it looks ok, is there any more I can do?
 
To really check for wear you really need to get both hands on it. Check for play and see if there are any stiff spots. The good thing about the cardan joint is they can hold up for a couple hundred thousand miles or more. Also they can fail early. There is not set change interval other than "on condition". Also the carrier bearing should be checked if you remove the carden. See if there are any tight spots or rough spots when you rotate the bearing inner with your hand/fingers. If tightness/rough spots it should be replaced.

I did have a crack at removing it but it would need drifting out which I think would likely do more harm than good which is why I wanted to check it in situ. I have given it a good twist round as far as possible and there's not a sign of play or stiffness and it seems to rotate perfectly in the bearing without any graunchiness, tightness or feeling too loose. As far as I can see it's good to keep going and since I rarely cover more than a 1000 miles a year I hope it should last a few more years yet!
