After a brief brain fade (on my part) yesterday, my Norge decided to lay down and have a rest on the road. It fell over while stationary so just a few tiny scratches. The engine was running at the time and my first realisation after it fell was that the engine didn't cut out. I quickly stopped it before any engine damage was done.

I've seen on the wiring diagram Item 52 - "Fall Sensor" that is wired back to the ECU. Am I right in believing that it is there to cut out the engine in the event that the bike goes over? If so, where is it located, and would there be any reason why it didn't function?

On the N1200-2V, the tip over sensor is just forward of the main fuse terminal to the right side of the battery tray (just under the the back edge of the tank). I haven't seen any N8V's yet to say if it exists or not. If it doesn't, you should be able to easily add it as I'm sure the wiring is there for it if it's not. If you want to take some pictures to post of this area, I might be able to point it out if it does in fact exist on your bike.

I also have a Norge 8V GT and have dropped it whilst engine running, but at a standstill. my foot kept it off the ground so no damage, but the engine kept on running. reckon the sensor must be an add on ?

I'd say it depends on how far from vertical the bike goes. When I had a parking lot drop on by B11, (unseen gravel) she went horizontal, engine did shut off.

Depending on the model year, the fall sensor may be considered optional. I posted about this on the Stelvio forum when I had the same experience as you. '12 Stelvio. Fall sensor optional. The wire harness for it is there, but no sensor. If this is the case with your Norge, you can purchase and install the sensor like I did.
