Oil Pressure Switch - just how tight!?

I'm hoping to cure a long standing oil leak that I've been trying to ignore for some time.

So, I have my new oil pressure switch along with it's hex adapter.

I'm not sure how tight to do it all up though. Is it a sort of just nip it up, or really tight? Is there a danger of over tightening and damaging the threads in the engine casing? But I don't want to do it so loose that it continues to leak, or come undone.

I have a 21mm plug spanner which I hope will fit, so I can get a torque wrench on it if that helps.

Apply a little thread sealer & snug it down.
If in doubt err on the side of loose it's better than stripped threads & you can always snug it down a bit more.

One of my brothers lives by the rule" It ain't tight unless it's stripped" we call him "one more" short for Just one more turn.
 
Also be sure to use a new crush washer when installing. I use a bid of clear RTV on that crush washer. Not OMG tight. Snug will do. It isn't the part that holds the bike together. Oil leaks from the sender usually come up through the body of the sender, not where it is mounted.
 
Thanks Guys, I'll put the breaker bar away! Was going to do it tonight, but was struck with indecision and spent the evening procrastinating instead.

:rofl: Ha ha ha! I have a mate who is a born and bred farmer. I'm sure his theory is that you do 'em up until they go soft, then back 'em off half a turn. I've put 30+ helicoils in his Beemer for him - so far.

Ninja, what the others have said is good. Re-nipping it up a little more is definitely easier than putting helicoils in.
 
My granpa used to tell people when they were backing up a truck:
