HELP!
Anyone with any helpful advice info on this would be greatly appreciated.
Friends Breva 1100 starts up, runs for a few seconds then stops, won't start again until left for a while then, same thing.
Sounds to me like a fuelling problem but when ignition is turned on (and ear to tank) I can hear pump pulsing , then a gushing sound, then nothing.
Is it possible that a) filter is clogged or, b) tube between pump and filter has rotted/broken/come adrift?
OR,
maybe it is not a fuelling problem???
Again,
HELP!
I recommended this bike to a female friend who suffered this after a couple of weeks trouble free riding so...I feel a little responsible - its sitting in my shed now, awaiting re-incarnation.

N.B.
Oh yes and,
ROBLATT (remember me Breva 850, Melbourne?) how about regaling me with your sage advice regarding the quick (yeah right!) disconnect?

When doing a start cycle it is normal for the fuel pump to run for a few seconds then shut off. It will start again when the engine starts. When it shuts down and you cycle the key do you hear the fuel pump run again? Have you checked for any error codes? Do you have access to software to read sensors and components in real time?

Thanks John,
By "cycle the key", do you mean turn the key to 'on' again?
If so, then yes, the pump does cycle again.
I have only just retrieved the service key from the forum. Presumably any error codes would be found in the 'diagnosis' mode?
Only saftware that I have is a VDST that I used to set TPS on my Griso (since sold).

Yes, cycle key is turn on again. That eliminates the fuel pump and fuel pump relay since it comes on. The Griso has the same ECU as the Breva, so VDSTS will connect. VDSTS will also tell you if there are any active codes. When the bike dies, do active tests on the coils with VDSTS. When coils get hot they may cease to function.

Yes I do remember. I've still got the B11 and she runs great.

The quickest disconnect is side cutters. ha ha. But there is a good thread here about that, you'll need to do a search.

Good to see you're still riding.

cheers

Robert

I reckon that the gushing sound suggests a loose clamp which is allowing fuel to escape back into the tank.

I'm with Mackers on this one. Open the tank, start (or try to) and see if the gushing is in the tank. If so, time to pull the tank and llok at the fuel filter

If it's got one of those half plastic filters, it may well be that has burst.

If the filter failed, I think it is unlikely that it would start at all. Maybe if it has a small crack that expands, but we will have to wait and see what he finds. At any rate, if he hasn't changed from the original filter, this is a good time to put in an all metal filter just to eliminate that possibility, which may or may not solve the problem.

OK,
So tank off, fuel disconnect, pump assembly removed.
I was hoping that it would be a fuel line break/slipped off but, as far as I can see the lines are connected, clamps in place and filter not burst.
However, it is one of the 1/2 plastic ones and seems 'swollen/blown outwards (it is also very black inside) - what do you guys think; is this the culprit?
I'll replace with new lines/clamps/metal filter of course.

Thanks for all your help guys - problem identified!
The plastic half of the filter has come away from the metal part - easy fix!

I was going to say, it looks like the plastic portion wasn't aligned, and now I see the post above. Great, glad you got it figured out... it's what I was assuming would be the case.
As I always say, replace it before it strands you.

The lines are usually fine to reuse on this model. Just a new filter and oetiker clamps should take care of it. Interesting that it ran at all with that filter. Usually they won't run at all with that issue.

I take it that you are the friend of Grisoguzzi who was the original poster?

This all promted me to check and replace mine on my May '06 Breva. Same filter. Replacement from GTx was great, with two different types of clamps. Reused the lines (gently heated with heat gun), then used the "oetiker" clamps. Easy work, and peace of mind.
Thanks for the heads up.
