Just got it firing!
A great video to help with getting valve adjustment right! Explains overlap very well too.

I once adjusted valves at tdc on overlap. The tap noise is loud as hell.
Not TOO loud! Tappet clearances which are too large cause problems of their own. I work on "whatever the book says +1 -0". However, you're right: you should be able to hear them happily ticking away.A loud valve is a happy valve. If quiet, clearance may be tight and the valve could burn.
Yes, but if you put the piston at TDC on overlap instead of TDC on compression your clearances will be way to much. I think that was the moral of the post, make sure you know the difference between TDC on compression (when both valves are 100% closed) and TDC on overlap (where both valves are actually open).A loud valve is a happy valve. If quiet, clearance may be tight and the valve could burn.
