Hi, I wonder if any of you kind, knowledgeable people can help me?
My 1983 v50 iii runs beautifully when cold but when hot (after say 10-15 miles) starts to stutter, lose power and backfire.

I had it serviced by a specialist a year ago (less than 1000km since) which included the the carbs balanced and the ignition timing checked.

Previous owner said he had a similar problem and replaced the coils. That was in 2018 about 5000km ago. Could they have gone again in this mileage/time or could it be something else.

Many thanks in advance for any help,

W

Failing coil(s) are a possibility. That is a failure mode for a coil. Do you still use the breaker points ignition or has an electronic ignition been added?

I had a problems with my V50 III ignition. For me one of the new resin coils I bought failed (completely melted out), and I replaced with metal Lucas ones. Also Condensers can fail with symptoms like you describe (or just be flakey out the box). In end I just fitted a Dyna-S DS5-1 and ignition has been fine - many will say points set up properly can run for ages faultlessly (just not for me !)

All said though, problems like you described can also be carburation (especially if you junked the original airbox or changed exhaust) & I upped both pilots and mains by 20% to get it running cleaner.

Thank you so much for your reply 🙂🙂

Given the fact that you say this problem will manifest itself everytime the engine gets hot, I am leaning towards a head removal and rebuild.

I suspect that at 40 years of age, your valves are in desperate need of new guides and/or at a minimum, re-lapping the valves to the head, if not requiring all new valves.

I would also be very diligent about checking your valve lash clearances. In fact, I would do this first and foremost. This clearance if set too tight, can be negatively affected by heat from the engine and can in fact cause the very symptoms you have described.

If the valve clearances check out, the I would definitely have the head professionally rebuilt.

Best of luck to you!
