hi all,

I've decided to get a pair of hagon rear shocks (good article in uk guzzi member mag), I've decided on the length (360mm, standard is 390), buti I have choices on the spring rate. The guy in the article is 12stone (12*14=168lb) and chose 23kg springs, I'm 150lb, so am wondering about spring rate. The choices are 18, 20, 23, 26, 30 and 35 (kg's), so I think my choices will be 23 or 20. Any ideas ?

Anyone know the rate of the standard springs ?

Chris

I got a little questionnaire before my YSS shocks shipped out to me. Factored in luggage, % time with luggage, % time with passenger, rider weight with gear etc. I would think the shock company should have something similar.
Sorry,
don't know the standard rate. Consider new forksprings too. They made a big difference for me.

Sorry, no.
I got the same questions as Nola, from Wilbers when purchasing. I think Hagon should be able to pick the right choice for you, having your numbers. If not, I'd doubt their seriousness.

I read the same article and was thinking about this, though from the opposite direction (I'm about 180lb).

You are about 11% lighter, but add on the weight of your riding kit the difference will be less than that. Also, what proportion of the load on the shock is due to the rider, rather than the bike itself?

If the 23kg spring is a good choice for the 168lb rider, you want something softer, but a difference of certainly less than 10%

So, the nearest spring (on the softer side) is the 20kg, which is 13% lower spring rate. That's going to be softer for you than the 23kg spring is for the guy who wrote the article.

I have no idea about the OE shocks spring rate but I can't imagine the Hagon being anywhere near as stiff. Actually I think the bike leaves the factory with the "damping rod" just welded to the shock mounts at either end, and the spring and damper are fakes to make it look like they spent money on an actual shock absorber. There's so little movement at the rear end I think it's just the effect of the tyre ;)

Also, is it true that the original Italian version of the owners manual states that if the suspension is too stiff, to compensate you should load the springs more by riding faster?

I'd 'phone Hagon and ask their advice and also check what they'd charge if you wanted to change the spring later on.
