A little background: I am pretty foolish, I purchased a leftover 14 Touring without ever seeing one in person (or obviously riding one) and now I am in the market for a top box. I will probably go with the Guzzi box in matching white and I know I have to order the luggage rack in order to mount it. The question I am trying to answer is: Is there any way to mount a backrest for use when the top box is off?

Thanks

Hmmm, good question. I will look tonight. There is only 3 bolts that hold the factory grab handle on and the same with the back rest but the luggage rack uses 2 additional side mounts that mount under the side of the fenders. I will see if these brackets interfere with the back rest if you remove the luggage rack.

It's gonna have to be a custom mount. You could buy two top boxes and cut one of them down so only the rear is left with the back rest. Or find a cheaper (and more sturdy) solution.

As an aside, I use my Givi mount to accept a top box that I have cut down to just the bottom remaining. This cut down base has a Givi tank mount attached to it, and I have two sizes of tank bags that will fit on. I can post a photo if any one is interested, but this has nothing to do with the original question.

On my old Bassa you could mount the rack and a back rest. I never added a top box, I just ran the leather trunk. I might have to settle for swapping it back and forth depending upon the current mission. For day to day use I don't want to run around with the trunk.

The grab rail and back rest setup off the SE model is probably the easiest option but not cheap.

OR...and I know this is going to sound like a smart -a$$ answer...You could go with the 65L box, with the nice backrest already installed.
You will get used to running around with the box permanently (more or less) attached. Just ask any Ultra Glide or Gold Wing rider.
The reason I offer this suggestion is that I ride with the Pillion Princess most of the time, and she could not be happier with the decision to go with the larger 65L case when we bought ours.
Yes. It is expensive, but it is extremely well made (substantially better than the side bags) and will hold a huge amount of stuff.
Just an option.

I was thinking about doing it this way. The 50 has a backrest built into it as well. My main problem is that I like to see things and touch them in person for stuff like this. Since they are both expensive, dealers tend not to stock them.

Thanks for the invite. I bought the bike from AF1 so it would be like bringing it home.
