New 1400s any known issues before I buy an elderado?

I just received an email from "The Clan" which includes a new "live chat " with MG, I don't know if this would be of any help or alternatively post a photo of the bike with a catalogue of your problems. No one likes to air their dirty washing in public but I'm sure if you put it out there someone will take notice. It may even prompt Piaggio to light a fire under the dealer.

The bitterness of poor quality service is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory.

Back when I was the Sales Manager at Brattin Motors BMW Motorcycles in San Diego, CA, I used to tell my customers,

"Price, Quality Workmanship, Customer Service - Pick any two."

A couple of minor issues with my Eldorado, that could possibly lead to major issues if not corrected. During maintenance, I had the spark plugs out, and found the gap was far wider than the specification in the shop manual. After resetting the gap, I've noticed a slight reduction in power, along with somewhat less detonation, which occurred when opening the throttle quickly without downshifting first (lugging the engine). I also had the rear wheel off for cleaning, and checked the transmission fluid level while I had the opportunity. It's possible that I didn't have the drive unit in an absolutely level position, which would have caused a false reading, but I'm pretty sure it was close. I had to add quite bit of oil to the unit to bring it up to the plug, considering the specification calls for 0.250 L.

The dealer told me over a week ago it was fixed. But no communication since. Why am I doing all the work? They and PIAGGIO should be working for me IMO.
Hmmmm, I'm confused, IF the dealer said it's been fixed that the problem??? As always they are the 1st line of contact and I suspect they notified Piaggio that it's fixed and hence the issue is closed. Ride on!

I bought bike from then in 2013 to ride back to Fl. The owners met me at the airport, put me up in a casino for the night, had a tab opened for my meals(dinner & breakfast) and drinks. The next morning I called and one of the owners picked me up at the casino. I couldn't have asked for better treatment. I picked up the bike, rode to Ca. played in the LA canyons for a few days, then to San Diego, up the coast to SF, then to Yosemite, to Mesa Az. to visit with a friend, then Austin/Luckenbach Tx., then home to Florida, 5+K mile in 28 days . The bike was flawless and remained so until sold. It was a Vespa 300!!!

I wasn't so lucky with the MG 1200 Sport I bought in Ga., after 2 years and 21+K miles it turned into a pile of sh$t.

Hi Todd,
I've been working too much, sorry for the delay. I have owned a 2001 MG Rossa Mandello #254 since 2010. Others are BMW K1600GTL, Harley's-name it I've owned it basically (through the years), BSA, Triumph, Yamaha, etc... Anyway, Piaggio has stepped up to the plate (it seems) with 2 additional years of warranty and the first three services paid. I'm happy with this, and yes I was a squeaky wheel and got greased for it. It turns out that Erik is the head of warranty issues for Piaggio, He is Iris' boss. I spoke to him and he was very kind and apologized. So I've settled down now. The bike arrived on a Sunday afternoon with a loose right rear turn signal, causing the reflector to hit the fender and scratch it. I sent pictures to Erik and Iris, but no word back yet about that. Unfortunately, I had to leave Monday morning for work (always out of town/state for 2 weeks at a time). As far as the dealer, someone stated how great he was treated by them. It's not about how I was treated, it's about the bike's treatment. IMO, they lack concern and with the turn signal noticeably loose, that should say it all. How do you miss that?

Todd,
I will be a customer in the next year if everything goes according to my hopes. Full fledged Fuel & Exhaust works for the ELDO. Wish you were closer to me or I to you, I'd love to have you do the work. But...I'll do it with your guidance instead.

Rubber side down gents,
Tom

I have a 2016 EldoradoI am slowly getting it up to my spec with Hepco Becker Ivory black bags and Minstral stainless pipes, I elected to use Rexxer for my computer mapping.
In all truth the bike ran great before messing with the injection system.

So after this upgrade their is a noticeable increase in power ,
the engine runs smooth once past 1600 RPM it is easily motored off from idle with no drama and it will pull cleanly from 1600 on up
The offbeat idle that Guzzi has programmed into the injection system is strange, it reminds me of a HD but once over 1600 its smooth . the engine in my bike is happy to run at 3 to 3.5K, it will roar to redline and has a magnificent tone while getting to the top.

My next issue to cure is a strange popping noise from the pipes.
This happens in the 3K to idle and decellerating in gear

Note when the engine is above 3K and decellerating the popping is gone.

Once the 3K is reached the pipes begin to pop all the way to idle.

I have Dave working on this issue he suggested to add more fuel to the system from 3K and down.
I have gone through and tightend the manifold nuts and the pipe clamps and the O2 sensors so I dont think its a false air issue.
That said i am very happy with how this machine performs and rides ,
I might be looking for a better set of rear shocks though,
the Eldo shocks are kind of special as they have stylish covers that aftermarket good shocks dont have

Mrmerlin, Check that the nuts on both exhaust flanges are tight and that you don't have a broken weld on your crossover pipe.

Hi KT I already did check the clamps and manifold nuts they were loose.

NOTE the popping still occurs right at 3000 RPM and below,
above that RPM their is no popping ,
so leads me to believe the exhaust system is tight and the issue is a lean condition that happens at 3000 RPM and below.
I have a new map getting installed tomorrow i will update with my results.
BTW I just got the nifty oil temperature dipstick from England its the part for the 1100 Guzzi,
its plug and play so now you will know your engine oil temperature

Mrmerlin, I'd interested to know what sort of temperatures you see on your dipstick(& from anyone else who has one)
I have the same stick & regularly see temps in or around the the red (120 degrees C) & that's in ambient temperatures in the low 20s.. always thought my bike ran hot so it would be useful to know if others do the same?

Jon

Jon, OK I will keep an eye on it .

I would also suggest that you invest in a IR gun and shoot your oil cooler lines,
see if its working
IE input is hotter than output. also shoot the pipes see how hot she is running

Mrmerlin, I've been thinking of getting the Rexxer system, would like to get Todds full works but exchange rate and postage ect, put it out of my reach and Rexxer is available here in Oz, Is the Rexxer worth doing in your opinion, does it seem to have much effect on fuel consumption and have you also modified the airbox?
John.

John my Eldo ran great right off the floor even with stock pipes, after fitting the pipes the bike is even better.

After adding in the Rexxer I find it provides more fuel and adds power, it is noticeable.
Mostly on acceleration and low speed driveability.

After downloading the new computer program I found an issue with the Rexxer.

The issue with the Rexxer is that you have to use the Aprillia RSV4 computer program to reset the TPS,
this is easy to do and simply scroll through find that bike and press play.

Dave said that its not the right handshake from the Guzzi program,
You will know if this will be an issue as the warning urgent service needed will begin flashing where the odometer reading is after you run the Guzzi TPS reset.

Also you will lose the throttle and the handgrip will not do anything ,
the idle will race to 2,600 RPM then drop and this cycle will keep repeating.

Flash the Aprilia TPS reset program and all is well
NOTE the RSV4 uses the same computer as the 1400 Eldo

Low speed handling is good and the engine pulls cleanly from low RPM ,
but its best to not lug the engine as this adds wear to the bearings.

my airbox is stock.
NOTE with a stock filter, it works.

Right now my only issue is that I have a popping issue from 3000 RPM down to idle while decelerating in gear.
A few here have advised its an air leak so i am working to cure this .
I just put in a richened map from Dave at Rexxer and used some red RTV to seal the pipe joints,

The next thing is to seal the flexible joint as its hard to discern if it has a leak.

I plugged the pipes and put in shop air and used soapy water to find leaks in the flexible connections
But nothing obvious showed up

NOTE the Eldorado has the flexible connections just infront of the slip on pipe connection.

I found my exhaust port bolts bolts were also loose so i removed them put some anti seize on them and tightened them down

When you are ready to have it run correctly and really well, I have the solution in the Store and as outlined here; https://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/guzzitech-gt-rx-modded-cal-14-dyno-vs-stock.13773/ -- with dyno results. I have corrected many "Rexxer-ized" bikes. Ask for your fuel and dyno charts and post them for us.

Say, will people here that have my fuel kit on parade on over and post on a Rexxer forum? At least you'll have dyno charts to show. ;)

Hi Todd I was onboard with your work and enthusiasm,
but after doing some more research into uncharted waters,
I just could not justify spending 1200.00 for a tuning system for a bike that already ran great.

The reason i went with the system i got was because,
I had a few of my riding friends that had different bikes and all had good results with the Re..er,
plus it was half as much for the upgrade as your system costs.
I was also swapping out the pipes so i did want to add more fuel.

That said I am not trying to be a salesman for the system I got,
but infact it may benefit you and all of the Guzzi riders here to see another option,
as i will venture a guess your system will probably work better.
You get what you pay for.

For me I am interested in making the tuning upgrade and forgetting about it ,
like a one time use.
I will bet other riders might feel the same.
I am not interested in removing the seat any more than necessary to ride the Eldo.
Once i can figure out this popping issue I will be set.
In the mean time if any of this info is not a benefit to your or your website please feel free to delete it.
I respect what you have created.
Thanks for all you have done for the Guzzi riders that are here

Hi Todd, I would love to get your fueling mods but with the exchange rate it's over $1700 australian plus postage etc, likewise with your new exhaust system, it looks fantastic and I would buy it without hesitation if I had the money. I'm with Mrmerlin in that my Eldo runs fine standard, 24,000kms so far, but I would just like to richen the mixture a bit purely for long term benefits for the engine and because of what you have said about them running so lean and then also I can remove the cats from the original mufflers to add a bit of sound and let it breathe a bit easier without leaning it out even more. I have a friend in South Australia who has your full fueling kit on his Cali and and says it is everything you say it is, as does everyone else on here that has installed it, there is no question about that but unfortunately at this point in time I cannot afford it. I have no illusions that the other system will give the power gains that yours does but ultimate power is not what I am looking for.

As Mrmerlin said I am quite happy for you to delete this thread if you so wish, I do not want to bite the hand that feeds me so to speak, this is a great site and a credit to you.

Funny that after 16+ years of Guzzi focus, I still have to debate this.
If you want to feel justified and good in what you think it does compared to what you spent, read no more.

Otherwise, perhaps you overlooked my post above (or are choosing to ignore it), but as stated elsewhere stated on this site, from what I have seen with the Rexxer maps, the fuel tables were largely untouched (and in one instance the bike ran worse than stock)... hence why I said don't buy into what you *think* it does without seeing proof, and I don't mean power increases. That is an added benefit. Dynamic Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR) data with cooler running and impressive throttle response is what my offering provides. The Marelli 7SM is a fairly complex ECU, and is even being used in the automotive industry. Guzzi also added an air injection system for 2016, so another obstacle to overcome.

That said I am not trying to be a salesman for the system I got, but infact it may benefit you and all of the Guzzi riders here to see another option, as i will venture a guess your system will probably work better. You get what you pay for.
Count on it... That you do. I (arguably/stupidly) try hard to be accommodating here for the greater interest, but please don't think for a second I'm not very aware of all options out there for fueling revisions. This is a business driven website, so posting competing products takes people away. No other commercial site would tolerate it, and even most other brand club sites have stricter rules.
Having an adaptive system that shows AFR data (and allows me to live remote tune), instead of broad static brush strokes, is well worth the admission on a $15k+ machine. Like I said, my system delivers with no issues including closed throttle popping.
What can be said about Rexxer (as a whole) with Guzzi? Not much is the answer.

All said, I do hope you enjoy your bike.

Jon I went out today and spent a while with riding and the IR gun.
I am seeing engine case temps near the oil pan of 230F the oil is running at just under the red line of the oil temp gauge my oil cooler was showing 210 in and 195 out this after riding in 80 F and moderate engine speeds and mostly cruising, this repeats as i checked it a few times.
My brothers HD 2001 springer heritage is showing case temps of 210 and the oil container is running at 125F
Clearly the engine is running hotter than I would like,
but it is an aircooled engine and its new,
mine only has 1000 miles, so as it breaks in I would expect the operating temps to drop a bit

I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but oil temperatures around the unpressurized boiling point of water does not sound excessive to me. I imagine water cooled motors would run these sorts of temperature.

As for your bro's Harley, it probably spent all it's energy creating sound waves, leaving little for creating other forms of energy.

Some data I found on Redline Synthetic 10w40

http://www.redlineoil-europe.com/motoroil/product.asp?product=10W40_Synthetic_Engine_Oil_00043

Shows a flash point (temp at which the oil starts to break down) of 248degC or 478degF, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I'm going to weigh in on this. If you buy a PC3 or 5 and have it programmed with the bike on a dyno your going to pay around $300 for the PC 3 probably more for a 5 then the dyno time is going to run you around $600 ( last time I had it done 8 years ago) if your getting Todds mapping, PC5, and AT300 for $1200.00 your getting a good deal. Todd I'm sure has more hours than he can count in the different maps for the 1400.
I was fortunate enough to buy 1400 with Todds upgrades already done but had other problems that Todd helped sort out plus tweaking the fuel delivery. Todd has these motors dialed in really well and I would highly recommend that use him rather than use rexxer or some other fuel delivery system. As one guy said after using rexxer ,you get what you pay for!!
