Why is this thread not getting any attention?

Hi Michael,
We are in the planning stages of a ride into Hagerstown the weekend of June 20 for the flat track races there. What MD "blue highways" can you recommend we cruise on coming from the Cleveland and Pittsburgh areas? I'll be riding my newly acquired '07 Norge, leaving my '13 Griso at home. Maybe we can meet if you're a race fan. Ed
I will be at the races as well. I am not sure about roads to take from where you are. Rt 50 from I-79 east to Winchester is nice. There are a lot of great roads out the way. In east Ohio 78 is very nice (first time I rode it I thought I was on a roller coaster), and there are a lot of others, 536, 555, and 800, but last time I was out that way they were destroying some of the roads with a lot of large truck traffic. 250 from up near Wheeling down to I - 79 is good, it actually goes all the way up into Ohio and hits I - 77 but that section is more scenic than twisty. 9 from Paw Paw (there is a really cool tunnel for the C & O there) to Berkley Springs, Which is just south of Hancock ain't bad.
There is more I am sure, and I have only been here for just over a year, although when we lived on the south side of Baltimore we would ride out this way often. We also used to ride to Indy every year for the motorcycle races, taking back roads like 78. Someone like Bill probably knows even more local roads than I do. I still work for a living. Once here there are a few cool local roads that we ride.

Pittsburgh to Hagerstown?

In no hurry?

Last July, Larry LaHue (a Florida Guzzi guy who later bought my brother’s 2012 Norge) and I rode this route in reverse. VERY fine. Very.

Larry was on my ’07 Norge; I, on my Griso.

I can almost guarantee you will love this routing, but it ain’t the fastest way to Hagerstown!

From south of Pittsburgh, pick up Pa. SR 51 south and take 51 to just south of I-70.

There, pick up CR 901 east to US 119 south, just before Mount Pleasant.

Take US 119 south to Connellsville, where you pick up SR 711 south

Take SR 711 to SR 653 (Jim Mtn Rd) to Garrett

Take US 219 north to Berlin, then SR 160 south (Cumberland Hwy)

SR 160 becomes Md. 47 at state line.

Go to tee at SR 36, then left/east into Cumberland.

[Top off in Cumberland, as premium fuel can be problematic to at least Berkeley Springs.]

From Cumberland, take SR 51 to Paw Paw, W.V., where it becomes W.V. SR 9. OBEY THE 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT SIGNS IN PAW PAW!

Let me repeat that lest you missed it: OBEY THE 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT SIGNS IN PAW PAW!

Take 9 thru Berkeley Springs to Hedgesville

At Hedgesville, take CR 901 over to US 11, then north to Hagerstown.

You’ll be grinning the whole way … unless you go 26 mph in Paw Paw.

To get a feel for this route, view it in “terrain” mode on Google Maps.

Yeah, I used to live two blocks away. Speed is a character and it is sad to see any shop go down. He is still there doing work, but I am not sure he will be able to build it back up.

I stopped by to talk to him after he moved into the shop area. He seemed pretty down on the whole "dealer" thing. I doubt that he will make another go of it....

Bill
Bill,

Thanks for the route, Bill. I graduated from Penn State Fayette just up the road from Connellsville and drove through western MD to my job in Gaithersburg many years ago, so I know those mountains are beautiful. It will be great to return to the area on my Norge. If you are going to the flat track races in Hagerstown, we will look you up, as Michael said he is going too. PM me and I will send you my cell phone # to stay in touch when we get over there. I'm really looking forward to the journey.

Ed,

Have a fine time at the races ... and on the ride to and from.

Kathi and I, along with a group of friends from Florida and Atlanta, will be in N.H. that weekend for the Guzzi "national rally." Riding up Wednesday and Thursday on as many nifty back roads as we can find, wandering around New England for a bit, then taking a "long cut" home.

Next time you are down this way -- I'm in Cross Junction -- stop in to scratch, grunt, kick tires, etc. ;)

Bill
