Starter spins. Does not engage

Ive been through the no start threads all over the place. I have dismantled, cleaned , bench tested, studied posts on subject, bead blasted all connections, ran direct power to starter to engage. Nothing. Not a thing. Put dial gage on flywheel to check if flywheel is out of round. Nothing Still spins. Starting to think about selling this piece of crap.

Is the Bendix moving forward to engage the flywheel? By spinning, do you mean the engine turns over but doesn't start? Or is it the starter motor spins, but the engine isn't?

Starter motor spins. Starter gear does not engage flywheel. Bendix moves to proper position on bench, does not on bike.

Does the pinion gear not move at all when it is on the bike or does it not move far enough to engage. If the gear moves forward it should engage the flywheel. May be the solenoid is going bad on the starter and it can't push the gear far enough, too weak to hold the pinion forward or does not stay forward when trying to spin the fly (?????). Perhaps the lever is warn and cannot push the pinion far enough ahead. Starter problems are usually a bad or stuck solenoid, but if is actually moving forward (at least on the bench) I would start with the solenoid.

Is the ring gear damaged somehow in that particular spot and the pinon gear can't engage to spin the fly. Try move the rung gear forward a little by rolling the bike in gear to see if that is the problem.

If the pinion move forward it should engage so this one is a bit of a puzzle.

Here is a good article on starters. Might be a worthwhile read...

Normally, on the pre-engaged type starter the solenoid has to pull the plunger right home in order to make the electrical contact to make the motor turn. So if the starter is spinning, the solenoid must be pulling in properly. There must be some slack in the lever mechanism which pushes the pinion forward.

Oddly enough the solinoid off the Valeo starter which failed 3 yrs ago (magnets delaminated in motor housing) fits the chinese ebay starter perfectly. The ring gear was checked.

After fully taking apart the Chinese knock off I discovered the outer teeth were worn away. Probably from the back fire that started this whole thing. Anyway the Chinese motor bolts right up to the Valeo gears and solinoid and is now working fine. The chinese one has the spring clip in the motor to separate the magnets that tend to delaminate on the older Valeos. thank for your help people.
