Has anyone seen this cam set up on a Stelvio before?

Hi All

I am perplexed! Some would say quite easy for me!

I have a small oil leak from the spark plug drain hole on between the sixth & seventh fin on right hand (sat on bike) cylinder. I reported this to a 20 year experienced Guzzi dealer and he said it was more than likely an o-ring problem from the bottom of the spark plug tube. So I whipped off the valve cover and could see no way of removing the spark plug tube as I was told to do on the phone by the dealer who considered it to be an easy fix!
However as you can see my cam bearing assembly has two tubes one for the spark plug access and one for something else unknown to me and the dealer. Neither of these is removable as far as I can see and are machined cast in place so unmoveable. This cam assembly was installed in Feb 2014 by a another genuine Guzzi dealer as part of the "warranty" replacement cams issue we all know about.

My dealer who now does all my repairs is now saying he has never seen these type of cam assemblies on a Stelvio and thinks they may be off a 1200 Sport!

Any ideas on what the oil leak may be caused by and whether you have these type of cams assemblies on your 2011 (2012 USA?)Stelvio and can confirm if they are for a Stelvio or from another bike as I am in a state of shock from what the dealer is telling me?

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark is there oil on the outside of the plugs? I think the tide seals requires the removal of the cam carriers, I had what looked like a similar leak which turned out to be a split breather pipe on the oil separator behind the steering head oil runs down the outside of the pipe onto the rear of the head, can also run down the vertical frame tube on the inside of the exhaust. My replaced cam carriers don't look like that.

Yes, those are the roller rocker assemblies. Since we don't get the 12S 8V here, they look similar to the Cal 1400 with the dual plugs on top, hidden under the faux valve-cover cover. You would have to pull the rocker assemblies to get to the spark plug tube, which is likely the leak point. See if you can find a part # if you do pull them.

Thanks guys for the replies.

I'm getting bike MOt'd tomorrow (Ministry of Transport test for road worthiness -yearly in UK) and will ask the service to have a look to see what he thinks. I will probably get my Guzzi specialist fixer to sort it as I am not qualified or able to take off the cam/rockers assemblies myself! Job for the dealer regrettably. I have been quoted a couple of hours at £75.00 inc tax/hour plus the O-ring which will probably be be a couple of £/$ tops!
Will decide tomorrow and book it in.

Thanks.

Update;
I am very sorry to report that the suspected O-ring is not the cause and the only problem the dealer can come up with is that the RH cylinder head is POROUS!
I am absolutely gutted by this and can't believe it. Price in UK for a new cylinder head is just short of a Grand£! Plus fitting.
Currently we are trying to get Guzzi to come up with the head under "gesture of goodwill" and await to hear next week.

Due to this its unlikely I will be attending this years Swedish based Quotatreffen as the bike will unlikely be ready prior to our planned departure at end of June.

Anyone heard of this happening on a modern 24k mile 8v head before?

Yours Mark

That's a bugger Mark, is the head off, it should be a simple job to pressure test the oil gallery, how long does it take to leak this much oil. Have you cleaned it off and seen how long it takes to reappear. Porous head can only be a manufacturing defect, fingers crossed for you. I too have issues with the bike an oil leak, dealer installed at a warranty repair from the small cover on the side of the front cover turned out to be an o ring installed with gasket sealer and the incorrect length bolts, I've only just got it back together then there the abs to sort hope you get a resolution soon cheers Paul

If the head is off can you blank off all the inlets/outlets and put air pressure into it? You will soon see if it is leaking. A bit of a mission but worth it if the alternative is 1000 quid.

If it actually is porous, are there not chemical compounds which can seal it? Would need to be properly degreased first of course.

Too many channels to seal. Also what you would use to seal the casting could block the passages. Best to replace. Even better if Guzzi foots the replacement as it is a failure in casting.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the interest and your support. The situation is that MG have not responded yet with a yes or no that they will supply the replacement head FOC or reduced price or No gesture of goodwill and also hopefully contribute to the labour?

We await to hear!

Update

My porous head issue is just about resolved but Guzzi said a BIG NO to replace under gesture of goodwill!

My repairer has got me a new head for half price so I am either going to get him to buy the bike less what I owe him or if not get it repaired and paid for (£1000.00!) and then sell it!

I have just had enough of Guzzi generally and they just don't want to look after loyal customers here in UK. I have had some other issues and this year the bike has been home on the recovery truck more times than It should have been. My partner also has a Stelvio and has had problems too.

I'm sorry to say that I am leaving the Guzzi family despite loving the bike for the past 3 years but with only 24 thousand miles on the clock it just isn't going to get any better living with it so its going to be moved on.

In its place I have a brand new 2014 model year Yamaha XT1200Z Tenere as they are reputedly ultra reliable and I have had Yamaha in the past including a XT660Z Tenere in my garage and that has never let me down whatsoever.

Thanks for all the support and help over the past few years and I will miss you all but just can't live with the Stelvio any longer!

cheers.

Guzzi should realise that we owners are a relatively small community and your experience does their reputation no favours.
I've read a lot of horror stories about BMWs but they do make their issues go away by standing by their product when shit happens.
All the best with the Yamaha.

I ask because it is being said that the problem is a porous casting. That implies that the casting is porous (no shit) and that would imply that the issue has always been there as a casting does not "become" porous, it either is or it isn't porous.
I did read the first post, and that is why I asked. I saw the contradiction in what was originally said compared to what was said later.
