Lately when starting my 13 Stelvio for the first time each day I get the little red arrow flashing and a message of "service", then goes off quickly. The bike starts easily and runs great im just concerned why this is happening. This only happens on the first start up, I can take an all day ride stopping and starting many times and it never happens again. any ideas?

Check the errors for history in the diagnostics menu. You will only be able to see the instrument panel errors history unless you have some software. See if there is a memo next to one and report back. Could be an oil pressure sensor starting to fail. The panel errors will pick that up.

No bulbs blown and everything seems fine except for message at cold startup. Ill check the error codes to see if anything shows up, thanks.

Just checked it and no codes on ECU or dash. Started bike and red triangle lights and service message comes up but turns off in about two seconds. If it makes any difference bikes battery is only a couple of months old and bikes starts immediately hot or cold.

Hmmmm….…no memos. Unless you have software to read the ecu errors you this is going to get tough.

You can turn the key on and get to the ecu diag screen were it would show the errors. Then start the bike. It will display the error while the service light is on. Only catch is there is more than one screen so may take a couple of tries and you will have to fast on the read.

Any recent maintenance like an oil change. Hopefully you can see the error.

Go to the diagnostic menu and see what the code is.
If it is an oil pressure code, you should investigate. Low oil level. Made a bad filter that has a bad back flow valve. Or even a bad pump. Or as simple as a bad sensor.

That's the thing, no error codes coming up. Ill try starting it with it in the diag screen, it only will produce the service message one time then it works normal.

Oil level ok?

I had a similar thing happen but it would stay on for a longer time. I had a loose engine temp connector but it stayed on for a couple of minutes from cold and then would disappear when the engine was warm. Since it was staying on for a few minutes when the engine was cold I was able to see the error. Once it warmed up it would only flash for a second.

Hopefully u can catch the code.

I'll check connectors for anything obvious, guess just ride it until it becomes more apparent what the issue is. Went for a two hour ride with some buddy's yesterday and other than "service" showing up on first start up everything was normal. I guess this is its "character" showing.

Here's what I've noticed on many '12+ NTX's, if the bike sits any short amount of time, a cold start will flash the SERVICE! on dash until the motors builds oil pressure, as witnessed by the clattery valve train until it happens for a few seconds. If you start and run the bike daily and this happens, replace the sensor (if you've already checked for tightness and connections).

Thanks Todd, That makes sense as mine does it only from a cold start, then service message goes off in less than two seconds. I'm guessing it wont throw an error code because it doesn't stay on.

Coincidentally, I have the exact same issue: SERVICE and the red triangle for about 1 second then off. No codes in the dash or ECU, I even tried to clear all stored codes with no success. I also reset the service indicator in the menu but it's still 1k+ miles from the 6250 mile service.

I recently replaced the leaking Yuasa with a Motobatt and also replaced the dash power outlet with a Blue Seas USB outlet (plug and play by the way, no fairing mods needed). Bike runs great, this is more of a nuisance but I would like to find out what the cause is.

Oil level is on the low end of the dipstick and has been at that level for some time.

Not to turn this into a "What is the correct oil level" thread. I have run mine at the full mark (when Hot) with the stick all the way in from new without issue and with minimal oil in the filter drain (I mean 2 or 3 drops at best). I have never had this indicator come up. Not saying that is the issue, but if you raise the level, does your light go away.

How many miles on your bike? mine is at 20500 now, like you saId just wonder whats causing this. My oil is near the upper end of the range and about half way through its miles in the pan.

Bike has 4700 miles on it, oil will be changed at 5k and has been in for ~4100 miles. I'll add oil to the halfway mark and see if that helps.

Mine has 31000 miles on it. Just changed the oil and change it every 6000 or twice a year, whichever comes first. I still say it is a loose or failing sensor but can never be too cautious.

I took a 450 mile round trip ride to Yuma Az with friends on Sat and the Service message and light only came on during the first start of the day. Now that I've had more time to think about this I think maybe Ive come up with the answer. Right before my last oil change my battery died and I had started getting the service light when starting. I replaced the battery and the service message stopped appearing. I changed the oil within a few days and used a different filter. I have been using the Bosch 3330 but the Napa store where I bought my oil didn't carry Bosch filters and cross referenced it to a Wix filter. I should have just gone to auto zone to get the Bosch but it was hot as hell that day and I didn't feel like making another stop on the way home. The wix is just a bit smaller overall and I wonder if this is somehow effecting the oil pressure reading at cold start up and triggering the message. The bike ran perfect on Saturday and got 42 mpg running 75- 80 mph the whole way.

I know of others using the Wix so I would not think so but anything is possible (faulty bypass in filter??). You said you changed the battery the last time this happened and the problem went away. A loose ground will also throw a fault if the voltage drops to low on startup. Give all the grounds (on the batter and behind the starter cover) a once over. Possible they have loosened up or become corroded. Start with the easy one and just tighten them and see what happens.

What battery did you replace it with?

A Bikemaster Tru Gel. Got it at cycle gear, A two year replacement warranty and for only $5. more extended it out another two years. No pro rating, no deductible, if it wont hold a charge within that 4 year period they will give you a new one. Cant beat that.
