Cheap and nasty Spotlights

I fitted some cheap and nasty Chinese LED spotlights today. They are the Cree U5 type that have 3 modes. High beam, low beam, and strobe. I removed the little U2 chip on the circuit board so they only work on high beam. I mounted them on the crash bars where the hellas were and put a fuse in the lines. I'll see how long they last. Not holding my breath.

Alan, can you elaborate on the Chip removal to 'lock' them on High?
Thanks.

Is it this type?

I bought a pair a while back, and the beam pattern and brightness (on High) is great, but no end of searching the 'net or contacting sellers/manufacturers yielded any info on modding them.
I really don't know what sort of use (or user) they're aimed at as sold . . .

Yep. Exactly the same Lights. I found a link on YouTube describing disabling the strobe mode (a goldwing guy by the name of Chris?). Screw off the alloy glass ring. Pop out the lens to expose the circuit board. The chip marked U2 is at 3 o'clock. It is small black chip with about 4 terminals each side. I got a pointy pick scraper and snapped each of the terminals on one side of the chip. Then bent the chip up and it snapped off. Light only work on high beam now. One of the youtude searches said to solder a couple of the terminals on the U2 chip but it is easier to just remove it.

Thanks again Alan.
Found the second one you mentioned, where it suggests bridging the two centre pins/posts at the 'top'.

A couple of the replies report that removing the Chip completely does the same job, as you suggested.

Will have to get another couple to try.

Cheers, found it.
Ordered a pair to try again, will post results when I get a chance to play with them.

Hi Alan.
I tired exactly the same lights.
I found the beam was too narrow to be practical. I also mounted on the original position of the hellas, but the glass lens on the front of the chinese one vanished before too long ... I guess it was shaken out somehow. I never noticed losing it, just that it was missing on one side, and then within a week or so, on the other side too.
I've since transferred a pair of VisionX Solstice 2inch pods from my other bike, and dumped the chinese ones as a bad idea. they looked ok though... If you can find a way to secure the lens better...

I'm guessing there's more than one factory churning these out, so quality may vary a bit.
The ones I got originally were fairly well put together, the Lens fitted snugly in it's recess, and the securing ring overlapped the Lens round the edge, I don't think they could have detached in any way.
The flat section around the edge of the Lens is fairly thin, so I guess that could break up if used regularly on rough terrain, I think I'll bond them in with some rubber-type sealant.

The Beams on mine gave a fairly good spread of light, I'll take some rough measurements of the Beams when I get them, and pics.

I've an earlier set of these on my stelvio (no metal guard, just the lamp) mounted on the original hella mounts with some spacers. When I first got them I opened them up to fit the mounting bolts and noticed mine had some large components soldered through the board (through hole electrolytic caps to be precise), to prevent the soldered joints fracturing from the vibration I glued the components down so they couldn't move (superglue I think).
About 8K miles of commuting and two continental holidays and they both still work OK, beam is a little narrow but as Aux lights to light the sides of the road ord help me be spotted when filtering they're fine.

Got the Lights through a couple of days ago, just took one apart, ripped out the U2 Chip, works as 'High Beam' only.
Result!
The beam on the one I've done seems a little less defined than the ones I got previously, might have a play with the Lens position to see if I can alter it slightly.
No chance to check the Beam Spread at distance yet.

My cheep and nasty light bracket broke after 3000km. Light still works so will make a new bracket.

I didn't have any problems as they sell the same lights with only high beam :D .
What i didn't like about them : the srews that fix the light to the bracket are to long and stick out ! So fixing them to your handlebar or crashbars means it doesn't fit well . But that was an easy fix .

Must be a fairly recent development, probably due to the guides/tutorials on the 'net.
Someone saw an opportunity.

Searched and searched before and found none like that.

Thanks for the link.

Just to be sure i'm not responsible if something goes wrong with them , they are Chinese after all :D
