Low rpm pinging fix

Hi guys, I thought I'd quickly share my experience with my brand new sport 1200 4v. I've only put 4,500 km's but since new at WOT between 2,000 to 3,500 rpm I've had consistent pinging which has annoyed me to know end.
After many hours reading through forum threads I thought i had nailed it down to poor fueling from factory (it still might). I was going through the process of organising a Rex flash but I thought I'd do some quick trouble shooting first so I went to a local car shop to buy some octane booster. Now an older gentlemen suggested running some lead additive through my bike like in the old cars, anyway long story short it removed 99% of my pinging whilst also improving throttle response in the low rpm range. Infact it's made a remarkable difference, I was able to pull 6th gear from 50km to 180-ish with no issues. Really happy. Thanks guys.

But i would not advise to do this if you have a catalic convertor. Might harm it.

I always carry some octane boost when travelling as some of the small ma and pop gas stations in the middle of no where don't dispense premium. I too will add it every so often if it is really hot out and will have a lot of stop and go that heats up the engine and leads to pinging on hard acceleration. Most (if not all) octane boosts on the market are cat converter safe so I would not worry about that part as long as you use the recommended amount.

Sean, are you referring to the 4V (as in 4V per head) or the old 4V (2V per head) here? There are a number of solutions to be had. Are you coming up for the Ragged Fringe rally in May? If you are, email me on tmowbray@ihug.com.au so we can organise a meet-up

Sorry, was not reading correctly, its indeed lead thats the problem. Not octane booster.

Real lead IS an octane booster as I recall. I don't know if the lead substitute he used is an octane booster. At least one lead substitute is just a lead substitute. Others are both lead substitute and octane booster.

octane is there for anti knock/ping for higher compression engine like we have. Lead was used in the past to protect valve seats and anti knock (artificially increase octane).

When they got rid of leaded fuels you either had to get hardened valve seats, or run a lead substitute and high octane to protect the seats and anti knock. No longer needed on new vehicles unless u want to increase the octane more. If you are getting a lot of pinging where u didn't before, may want to think about running some seafoam through the engine since u probably have a carbon buildup in the combustion chamber causing pre ignition (pinging). Running octane boost will only mask the problem. I try to only run it when premium fuel is not available.

Just to clarify, I don't think the lead replacement actually has lead in it. It states that "it's safe for catalytic converters.....and boosts octane" but has no list of ingredients on the bottle. So as mentioned it's probably an octane booster of some such.

I had a bit of ride over the easter weekend (1600km's) and had the opportunity to do some testing with and without the "lead replacement" and whilst using the same fuel octane at the pump. Even after 600km's straight of riding as soon as I ran a tank without the booster it would still ping at the same spot's in the RPM range at WOT.
The bike has now only done 6000km's overall so I wouldn't have thought it would have built up enough carbon to cause this but I might run this seafoam stuff through and see what comes of it.

Either way I plan on doing some fuel map fiddling soon and see if I can get it running a bit sweater.

Tony I'll email you latter about the fringe rally, I was down at Broadford Bike Bonanza with the Victorian Moto Guzzi Club which was awesome, especially the 500cc v8 guzzi on show.

Cheers guys

My pinging was always worse with "country fuel" but has almost disappeared since a timing and balance retune , vibes will move around according to tune, yes those motors will pull from not much more than 2000 up really well ! if you can eliminate the pink.
keep it simple

Mine pulls, in top gear, from circa 1800 RPM all the way to 8400 RPM, where it starts to get a bit rough ( I know it's the ECU cutting the fuel - I could raise the max revs in the map, but the factory setting seems OK - equates to around 240 km/h in top gear - might be doing my licence some serious damage too). This is a home brew map and all the old pinging problems are a thing of the past - now awesome acceleration and great economy to boot!
Variation in country fuel, just takes the edge off the performance - no pinging. I normally run 98 octane from Shell, or BP in a pinch. Failing that, any 95 octane brand as long as there is no ethanol in it. Generally, there is a Shell or Coles Express in most places.
