After running at normal temperature for 100,000 k my breva 1100 is suddenly running very hot, really really hot. Hot enough to melt the blanking plug in the bolt hole just near the bell housing.

Any Idea what would cause this sudden overheating? The oil was changed about 400k back

Any changes in the way it is running?
Exhaust Leaks?
Exhaust pipes discoloring?

Not sure where the "blanking plug" is or what it is made of so ......
If it is back by the bell housing I can't imagine what would get hot enuf to melt rubber or plastic unless there was an exhaust leak right on the plug.

A super lean fuel condition would probably discolor the pipes and if bad enuf burn a valve or scorch a piston & you would notice a difference in the way the bike performed.

Got my curiosity up & will follow along to see what happens. keep posting please.

What oil did you put in?
I have no clue the oil that was put in but after it got that hot I would have it out.
I would check for plugged exhaust and if the oil filter is correct and installed correctly beside the other items listed. At 100k has the fuel filter ever been changed or have you pumped a bad tank of gas lately? Maybe the filter is restricting the fuel to the injectors making it lean? A bit of a guess there. Maybe a lot of water in the fuel. Pull a plug and see what color. My money is white.

I use penrite 10w60 have for a while with no problem. I've checked the exhasust and a bit of discolouring (blueing) just before the pipe turns into muffler so will check the fuel system. Thanks for all the comments.

I am not a guzzi expert, but heat can be affected by the fuel air mixture or possibly the ignition timing on any engine. Lean mixture would be my first thought. Timing would cause a noticeable perfromance change.

Start with going back to basics. A throttle body sync and TPS reset may be all you need. The TPS is an electronic device and the reading may drift over time. This may cause your lean running/hot problem. I'd be tempted to see what the TPS reading is before you start. If it is much less than the 4.6 degrees specification, that could lead to you lean condition.

Thanks again for the comments yes it was lean mixture. The blanking plug melted from the radiant heat off the header pipe. The fueling reset and all running well.

Thanks

Can you share specifically what you did to reset the fueling? If you reset the TPS, what was the reading before you reset it?

The bike has a custom map with the lambda bypassed. Checked the co2 levels with a gas analyser and lifted the levels to provide a richer mixture. This has reduced the running temperature

Restricted fuel delivery would do it, so if you haven't pulled and cleaned the fhrottle bodies at the recommended intervals and tested the injectors, I would. A sudden partially clogged injector would do it in short order, and richening the mixture might just be a band-aid. Congrats on 100k, cheers to another 100.

Thanks throttle bodies were cleaned. In fact engine was out to fix a leak (gear box) in the bell housing. and everything resit when the bike was put back together. I must admit I'm a bit hard on the bike. Last year I did a 13000 k return ride from Melbourne up past Cooktown on Cape York. Quite a few rough and dirt roads. Probably wasn't in the design specs.
