At present I'm riding in an aging pair of Kevlar lined Hoods. They're a bit heavy and stiff off the bike despite frequent washes. I don't fancy getting a pair with inserts, and definitely don't want a leather pair. I just want something soft, and with reasonable protection. Any recommendations?
Oh, and when I read of Americans riding in leather pants and vests, it conjures up some really odd images. Separated by a common language indeed!

I have been using FIRST GEAR HT Overpants for years and like them. They provide protection from the elements (waterproof) and skid resistance in the event of a fall.

I bought a pair of Draggin' Jeans many years ago. As they were starting to age and I need a second pair for trips I bought a pair of Sliders to try them. I also got the optional padding. After a couple of rides I decided the padding was a complete waste of money as I disliked them. The jeans were ok but not as good as the Draggin' Jeans so I bought another pair of those. (I wish I had the money back I have spent on motorcycles!) I also have a set of the Bohn body armor which are comfortable under regular jeans and not as hot as I figured they would be. A bit of a pain to remove and install the padding to wash them and they don't pack well so I use them for one to 3 day rides but mostly they hang in the closet and when it is hot I wear the Draggin' jeans and if cooler I wear my Aerostich pants and jacket.

I forgot to add that I saw an ad for the new Oxford jeans that looked good. Exchange rate from here and shipping means I'll pass for now but might be an option for you.

Yeah we have lots of folks riding around in cow skin here... what I don't follow is riding in shorts and sandals... egads!

Alex

Jeans normally, Fox Creek leather chaps for bad weather or long rides. No fun in stationary heat, but invaluable when the feces hits the fan.

I wear a few things from Aerostitch. They offer a variety of jackets and pants.
I have a pair of arborist pants from them, with extra material in key areas. I also have a two piece suit from them.

I've been into a local bike gear shop and discovered that there have been advances in clothing technology since I bought my last riding jeans. The Kevlar has softened, and the jeans are a lot lighter. On the down side, the price has shot up.
Still, time to buy a new pair, I think.

I bought some old stock Lindstrand Yago waxed denim with kevlar lining jeans. Best all round biking trousers I've ever had. Not sure they're 100% waterproof, but close enough. Very comfortable (though they're a bit low on the hips) kinda trendy (if that matters?) with plenty of room underneath for my moto cross shin and knee pads. Had them about 2 years now and they're still fab.

Ade.

Depending on temperature, I wear an older Hein Gericke Leather Jacket (red/white/black) and Leather chaps (red) or Vented textile jacket (white) and Alpine Stars over-trousers (black vented, with knee and hip pads). Tall Gasolina boots.
