Hello all,
I have a '16 stone that Ive put 14k on it. Since March. It developed a strong vibration at 40-4500 rpms. Since it was time for service I told them (BMW of Escondido) about it and their response was that it was just a Guzzi thing. They did the service and it runs the same. It doesnt seem like the clutch is slipping and acceleration in good.

It feels like Im going too slow for the gear. 70mph is right at 4500. Its so annoying its all I can think about when im riding. And suggestions?
Thanks.

G'day Steve,
My V7II Stone has a vibration in the 3000 - 3500 region. The vibration suddenly and various things were looked at by me. Finally I checked the valve (tappet) clearances and foun one which was way out (must have forgotten to tighten the locknut properly). Note that there are a couple of clearance values floating around and the larger one is correct now. The factory originally specified tighter valve clearances for reduced mechanical noise but there were valve seat problems. From memory, the clearances are:-
Inlet:- .006" or 0.15mm. Exhaust:- .008" or 0.2mm. I suspect that the different vibration period is due to the tappets being set to the earlier, smaller, specification.

Cheers

Brian

Thanks for the info Brian. I'm not sure which it was set to, Ill looking to that. I had it service and they were very close to specs. The vibrations are between 35- 4500 rpms in all gears. It feels as though its on the wrong gear unless I'm doing 80mph. Even the left foot(and passenger)peg is affected. Its pretty much unrideable. The tech that did the service said that he didnt notice anything that wasnt nomal Guzzi. But Ive put 20k miles on it and I know its a recent development.

Hello,
Im still having vibration problems with the vibrations on my V7. I took it to GP in San Diego and they replaced a rubber mount for the tank and said the exhaust was touching the frame. They actually made it worse. Now the vibes are at not just in the barsand pegs but it moves up through the seat during acceleration and down in decel. Its so bad at 35-4500 rpms that its unrideable. I havent ridden it in 3 days and my arms still feel weird. It runs fine performance wise. The forks are smooth at speed.
They told me that they dont notice anything thats not normal. Iwould never have bought it if that was normal.
Someone please help with suggestions.

I'd look at clutch adjustment, solved 99 percent of mine. first I made sure everything else looked fine and was not touching tweaked the adjustment on the clutch a few times solved my vibrations.

That's were I adjusted mine and I used feel and free play. I would pull over and tweak it until everything felt right. besides the vibration, the lever was very hard to pull as it was set up from the dealer. now it pulls much easier.

Steve,
Guzzi's do have a vibe & it is more noticeable to people who are used to different brands of bikes.

I did see where you said that you have put 20k (20,000 miles correct ?) on the bike & that this is something new.
I will ask a question that may raise some hackles: Have you been slamming gears or pulling wheelies or possibly allowed somebody to ride the bike that has?

Having owned many Guzzi's over the years I have noticed that they have a rather long break in period compared to other bikes.
The 20,000 mile mark is actually one of them but it has been my experience that by this time they have settled into a very comfortable machine. When ever people ask me about buying a new Guzzi & they are new to the brand I usually laugh & recommend they find a used one with around 20,000 miles on it because it has gotten past all the new bike aggravation by then.

I am not familiar with the small block V7's, I have never owned one so they may be different than my experience.

It may be difficult to find another Guzzi owner in your area but it would be cool to get somebody (other than a dealer) to ride it & give you an opinion.

Hi Trout,
The miles are all mine, 90% highway at 75/80mph. No wheelies or full throttle upshifts or stoppies. It was my daily commuter.
It seems the higher the rpm the more tollerable it is. The last time I rode it I had to keep it around 90+. The vibration is still there its just faster. I did notice that at 80mph the rpms were right at 5k and now at 80 they sit at 4600. IDK if it means anything, less rpm at the same speed.

Ive checked the mounts and it was present before the tire change. Although now 5k miles later its much stronger. I think that its firing harder than it used to.

Where/what is the vibration? Is it definitely the engine that seems to be running "lopsided"?
If it had two throttle bodies I would suggest that they need synchronizing but there is only one on your bike.
So, my suggestions:
Pull off the throttle body hose, the air duct between the throttle body and the heads, and check for dirt and obstructions.
Run several doses of fuel injector cleaner - Techron, Sea Foam, or my favorite, StarTron. The ethanol in the gasoline makes crud that plugs the fuel injectors. (The injectors on my F800GS plugged, and the holes are so small that they could not be cleaned, so they had to be replaced.) One injector may be have a restriction.
Replace the spark plugs and plug caps. Shorting thru the caps to the cylinder heads is a known problem for V7s and Stelvios. If the cat on one of your mufflers (it's at the engine end of the muffler) is turning the muffler blue this is definitely one of your problems. Again, one plug may be shorting and the other is OK.

Go to a dealer, borrow a V7 with a few thousand miles on it, ride in your normal fashion and compare. If there's a significant difference have one of the dealer's men ride yours for a significant distance (in the way you ride it) and see what he has to say.
If you both agree that there's an appreciable difference between the two bikes, then there may be a problem with yours. If not, then you may be focusing on something and becoming paranoid about it unnecessarily. We've all been there with something. With me, I bought some expensive hifi gear, and heard pops and crackles that no-one else could, and that I eventually conceded didn't exist outside my head. I relaxed, and they went away.
