Griso oil filter change question

My dealership did my first oil and filter change along with other service on my used 2007 Griso. Was in the process of changing my oil and filter today. The guy I bought the bike from gave me three new HIFLOFILTRO HF 551 filters for which I have the appropriate cup-style filter wrench. However, when I tried to remove the dealer installed filter, I discovered that it's slightly larger in diameter than the HF 551. Anyone have any idea what size filter wrench I might need for this filter? I'd call the dealer but they are closed on Mondays.

Normally count the flats and check at your local Napa, AutoZone, etc. Not always a guarantee but but works quite often. Otherwise try a spiral band tool that is only for removal. I have run into 3 different filter wrench sizes on my Guzzis. I now run PureOne filters. Purported high quality, easy to get and I have a wrench that fits.

Of course the best method is to use the correct cup or the spiral wrench as mentioned before... but if, like on my Griso, you have a completely rounded filter from the PO trying unsuccessfully to remove it then punch two holes about 1.5 inches apart on the underside of the filter, insert needle nose pliers into the holes and simply twist the filter off. Savage but effective.

Yeah I went through the Oil Filter Removal Hell with my 07 G11 that I bought used a few years ago. I ended up purchasing a 3 fingered clamping tool to get the filter off and now only get HIFLO's from MG that the corresponding cupped wrench fits.

I do most of the maintenance on my bikes.

Thanks for everyone's input. I ended up finding a wrench at Harbor Freight like the one mentioned by not-fishing. Worked like a charm.
