Breva 850 2007: When heated up bike keeps shutting down

Hi All,

Just noticed an issue with my Breva 850 2007 model. 1st it's been misfiring and occasionally choking (like the bike has a hiccup). But now it shuts off while I'm slowing down just before a halt the bike will trip off say around 2000RPM.

I'm suspecting either plugs and/or coil. Would appreciate any ideas on this issue

Oh forgot to add. It gets worse when the engine is heated up. The bike won't be able to keep up idle until I revv it. When it's cool it's alot better

For the idle issue, make sure the stepper is operating properly. They sometimes become clogged with oil from the airbox and a cleaning may help. Also if the engine has been over filled with oil, the throttle bodies can also be contaminated and possibly lead to what you are experiencing. There are threads on this forum on how to clean the stepper and throttle bodies.

Would love to know what a stepper looks like and if possible any link on how to clean it

Remove the fuel tank. Remove airbox cover. on the right side there is a hole that the supply line for the stepper is connected. Reconnect the fuel tank but still be able to access that hole. Start the bike and spray carburetor cleaner into the hole. If the engine stutters, back off and let is stabilize and repeat several times. That should take care of the stepper.
 
One of the sounds is like the starter is engaging with the engine running. As for the poor running, my initial thought are engine temperature sensor is reporting higher engine temperature than the actual leaning the mix too much,or injectors that need cleaning.

Were the spark plugs really white? If so it would indicate lean running. If heavily sooted, (black) then the temperature sensor may be giving to low a temperature reading so the mix is to rich. Also check for vacuum leaks. You can do this by spraying WD 40, or being very careful with the carb cleaner around the inlet boots.

Yes The knob that starts the engine is a bit stuck so when the engine trips off the kick starter picks immediately. So any time you heard the kick starter was how many times the engine went off.

Also the spark plug was black and soothed

Please where is the temperature sensor located?
 
The engine speed sensor (cam sensor) is located on the left front of the engine forward of the oil pressure switch. The engine temperature sensor is located in the right cylinder. You have to lift the fuel tank for access. It is good to put thermal mastic under the temperature sensor so it reads the cylinder temp more accurately. I have seen several engine temperature sensors that reported incorrect temperatures and had to be replaced.

I finally got to set the valves but after testing the bike for about 30mins in and the engine was heated up it started messing up again Had to tow the bike back home today Upload 2016 12 31 0 3 24

I renamed the videos so you can refer to any video if you have any questions. Also the filler gauge I got was in mm so I converted inches to mm and worked with what I had

I guess these descriptions is looking at the engine from a sitting position as if I were looking at the dashboard. Meaning left is Clutch lever and right is Front Brake lever :nerd::)

will check them out and see if I can replace both asap
 
Next time the bike shuts down, disconnect and check the resistance between the two contact leading to the phase sensor. It should have a resistance value of 680 ohms +/- 10 % at 20 degrees C.
