Several questions on my 2012 Norge

Hello Todd, my name is Benjamin. I have a 2008 Motoguzzi Norge. It's a beautiful motorcycle. But I feel as though the people who I have trusted to keep her running wonderful have forsaken her as well as me. They profess that my bike is a leaker. But the person that I bought the motorcycle from is a mechanic and he has done a wonderful job and keeping her running tiptop. As I bought it in for scheduled maintenance the mechanic that I bought her into made me feel as though he did not do The work that I paid him for. So I found a specialist in San Francisco and I have been the victim of going back-and-forth and back-and-forth to resolve one issue after another after another. Now, my bike still will not start when it gets hot, Which can be just as me riding down the street to the local gas station to get gas. We're taking her out on Highway one and being afraid to pull over for gas for not being sure that she will start again. The last two times she stopped on me, the battery was drained and I needed to get her jumped in order to bring her home. And the previous time before that, my motorcycle actually shut off on me while I was on the freeway and I had to have it towed back to the specialist to fix a problem that he had said that he had fixed. At this point I am very hesitant as to who I can trust to work on my motorcycle now. The previous owner has offered to help me, but I feel as though I will be taking too much advantage of him. Is there anyway that you can help me resolve this?

If you pay the previous owner for his labor time, you are not taking advantage. Also abbienormal has given you good information.

I have a new question about the clutch lever. The pin that actually actuates the master cylinder appears to be held in by a straight blade screw. Heating it up to very hot then trying to turn it out only succeeded in twisting the head off so I am really screwed now probably. I hate flat blade screws and I used a proper sized Snap-On screwdriver. I know I can get it removed by the machinist at work though I'll have to find another screw that works. Am I missing anything in the removal or is it just red loctite and Guzzi's way to make sure I only buy their $165 lever?

To continue my saga I will post this update on my Norge.

I purchased the NGK SB05E plug caps. I also bought the XD05F caps with the 90 degree bend but they are too short for the Guzzi. I then took the rubber seals off the bottom of the XD caps and put them on the SB caps so it would fit the plugs better. This I then removed and did the plug cap/wire update I posted above. While at it I installed CR8EIX Iridium spark plugs and a K&N air filter. I also was going to change the fuel filter to a Mahle KL-145 all steel unit but when I opened the tank up I found it already had one.

I am set to replace my current CR8EKBs. What was the gap of your CR8EIXs out of the box? I bought a box of 4 and out of the box they are from .74 to .79 quiye a bit more than the recommended .6 to .7? Did you try to gap yours to spec?

To be honest I cannot remember what mine were and I did not enter it in my maintenance records. I know I gapped them as I always do. Changing plug TYPES from original I normally go with the plug manufacturer's recommendation so my money is on the specs called out on NGK's site. I copied the first column from the plug specs and pasted it below. As you can see they recommend 0.8mm so yours are actually a touch closer. If I saw that small of a variation weighing my skills at bending for correct clearance and what you have I think the 0.79 is going in as is and the 0.74mm, which is .002" under spec would be double checked as I don't know if my plug gap tool or my usage of it is that accurate. Then it would probably join the party. If they were packed with the protective tube around the electrode end then my money is NGK can bend the outer electrode more square to the center electrode than I can. Plus you have to be very careful not to bend the center electrode on these fine wire plugs.

I have been busy this winter getting the Norge ready for next year. I finally got around to installing the Matris front fork upgrade and the tapered roller bearings. I ended up using a cutting wheel on my dremel tool to remove the inner races. I had decided to leave the originals in till I saw marks on the races where the balls rode. No divots yet but why put it back together? I bought an internal bearing puller set but neither myself or 2 friends could get it to pull them out. Then I took on the broken drain tube on my airbox. I tried to figure out how to make it stay put and came up with the idea of the sleeves they use with the compression fittings on plastic tubing. I have included photos. Worked great so far.

Another thing I noticed while working on the airbox was the inlets. I have had the discussion on cleaning the stepper motor by spraying in the tube while running but since I was in there I removed the hoses and sprayed carb cleaner in the stepper valve. Nothing ran through so I figured the valve was closed while off. I let it soak and a few minutes later I went to blow it out and it had cleared. Now if I blew in more it went right through. Apparently it was plugged up fairly tight. I shot more through it, dried it with air then reassembled the hoses. When I did the rollerization I saw a lot of build up on the throttle plate and inlet. It appears to be gone now. I have fed a fair amount of Seafoam and Amsoil injector cleaner through the bike so maybe that helped.

Hey AbN... you've been busy;). Sounds like you are set up for it though, and that's a good thing. Just curious as to how the fork upgrade went for you. I don't suppose you've had an opportunity to test it? I also live in Ohio, and got some rides in recently with the 60's days we've had in Cincinnati. Anyway, hope it's a big plus for you!

Thx for sharing.

No test rides. It is still on the lift as I finish the oil change and putting the airbox back on. I am going over to my Suzuki dealer today to ride my V-Strom home from the stator recall today as it is a sunny 22 degrees out! Fortunately he is only 15 minutes away.

Great work abbienormal!
I also replaced the rear suspension on my '07 with one of Todd's offerings (Penske at the time) and installed his Matris kit also. It changed the Norge. Only scraped the centerstand once since the install, but the bike was fully loaded and actually had no business taking those twisties at that speed ;-)

The last 3 photos of the inlets labeled roller lifter were done when the bike only had 2,900 miles on it. It now has 10,700 miles so the cleaners and only running high test fuel appears to have cleaned it up. I didn't know the first owner and the second struck me as maybe cheap enough to run regular fuel. I could not believe the inlet was that coated in such a short time. But almost 3 years old and 3,000 miles means not a lot of riding or getting it up to temp.

To Nick.
My 2007 had Todd's Hyperpro front and back after I dragged the centerstand enough to pick up the rear tire once. I took it off before the upgrade. After the suspension upgrade I modified the stop and got the stand up higher. I never touched it again but was always worried. I left it on the 2012 for a while but I had a fear of dragging it and noticed I was VERY cautious in left turns so I took it off. I never touched it down and doubt if I would as I get slower and slower as I get older but the nagging doubt was too strong.

Almost ditto, but with HyperPro on rear from Todd.

Lordy, what a difference.

I even removed the center stand once before that up gunned shock, and scraped the can ... and I don't ride like Todd or #46. :giggle:

Anyway, I changed out after a nanosecond of "no wheels on ground" pivot on the centerstand -- with Kathi aboard! :inlove: -- on way from Tellico to Such and home. My sphincter still fuses on the that brief but compelling memory. Had the wheels not regained traction at same time in such an flashing instant, there would have been way more drama. :sweating:

Only a couple of touch-downs since, and those because I was riding over my skill set, and possibly, too, by I-really-should-eat-fewer-biscuits-&-gravy-breakfasts. :wasntme:

I finally got to ride the bike today for a bit over 70 miles. The Matris fork upgrade has improved the front end a lot. I hit bumps that I did not feel till the rear tire hit them The front just went over them, The feeling is much better. Not sure if it is the tapered bearings or the new forks but a bit of unsteadiness when hitting a bump mid turn at speed seems to be gone. My engine is running smoother which I am attributing to cleaning the stepper motor. Gas mileage still sucks. I think it is ready for the season. Photo is of it being not quite ready to ride.

I missed this post, but glad to read it. Matris kit might be in my future too! I'll be calling my shop this week to check on it vs the kit from Guzzitech. Glad there is a positive change. Looks like a nice setup to work on your bike too!

This is the kit from GuzziTech I installed. Just allow for delivery time. It apparently comes from Italy. Mine took almost 4 months.
Thanks. Yes, they sure do.
Orders at end of July and all of August orders when Italia is closed for almost the entire month, along with all of the small moto businesses preparing for the big end of year shows like Intermot and EICMA, coupled with December holidays, offen pushes things way out.
Spring/Summer orders are usually 2-4 weeks on average, but sometimes things are out of my control and can take a LOT longer. Note again these are ordered based on your weight, so I can't/won't/don't stock them.

Thanks for that comment/info, Todd(?). Good to know about the weight basis. I may be in touch about placing an order.

I was out for a short ride yesterday just enjoying the day. I think I finally have the bike where I want it as the ride is great, the handling very good and the engine is running very smooth, BUT.... Is anybody running a map of Todd's and getting decent mileage? I'd like to see if he could duplicate it on mine. Now I am not condemning Todd's map as his map did not lower my mileage. Don't tell me Guzzidiag for now. I rode 176.5 miles yesterday on 5.195 gallons of high test for 33.97mpg. Last ride was 33.5mpg. No motorcycle I have ever owned has gotten under 40mpg including my California 1400 which got 43 once broken in.

Depending on how you're enjoying the bike and the air temps, I can tweak it for you if you have my Flash Tool.
My full kit NTX can get that low if I'm enjoying the throttle and the air temps are below 70*. Once the air temps are above, and in a higher than average commuting speeds, I see upper 40's. 90*+ Temps return over 50 with my full system.
