I have been eyeing a Local 1000 SP. Lower Km looks to be in decent shape. What kinda money are they worth. What should I be look for issue wise?

thanks.
This one has 34000 km and looks to be in good shape and well loved. I would put it at a 7 outta 10. the owner is asking $6500 cdn but im sure it could be had for 5k. I was thinking more like 4K

Hi Glenn
I lived with a couple of mgs of that vintage through the '80s. These days you can pick up a FI Cali for about $4K Can. What the Brits called "an Italian Virago", but they have some potential.
Unless you are a collector, 5-6K sounds like a lot.
Issues: The timing chain was an embarrassment. Not a big deal, but it needs an automatic tensioner, and the timing case can be converted to a proper oil-bath. A nice winter project. Hell, I even used a chain master link in mine. If you are an NOC member, I can point you to a couple of my write-ups in the tips books from the '80s. They were met by skepticism at first, till people caught on.
Some bikes (my LM 2) had line bore problems, almost impossible to fix, but rare, I think. A "bucking bronco" clutch engagement is a give away. In the immortal words of Alan Girdler: "Walk away as politely as you can".
The point ignition set-up is stone reliable once set up. The clutch hub would wear with high miles, causing a grabby clutch, but you are a long way from that. My old G-5 may still be hanging around Calgary...it got me hooked.
Good luck with the purchase, and sorry I am late to the party.

Glenn,
If that local 1000SP doesn't work out. I have an '83 1000SP-NT as pictured in my avatar at Independence Pass in Colorado. It's not currently for sale but I would consider an offer from a guzzi nut. I had it restored at Moto International in 2000, I've only put about 13 miles on it since then.
