Hi all

I have a '13 racer. I bought it with 3000kms. I ve done my 1st service on it last june when it covered 5000kms, changed all 3 oils . Now it has 7500 on it. My mechanic adviced me to change at least the engine oil. I think its quite early, what do you think?
Please note that i don t use it enough as i would like due to baby.

Thanks all

So that is like 1500 miles I think........seems a bit early to me. He may be saying this because it has been a year and many people will change on time or miles whichever come first.

Yes that s what he said. Wichever comes first..

I think some believe even with synthetic you should change it annually.
i checked today and the mechanic told me he used fully synthetic oil. but recommended still an annual oil change plus filter. he said due the hot summer we have over here....i don t know...2500kms?

If your bike is stored indoors, like in a garage, with a fairly constant temperature and humidity, then your synthetic oil is fine and there is no reason to change it so early.

If your bike is exposed to the outside elements all year long, with constant changes in temperature and humidity, then I would change it annually.

Yes its stored inside day and night and covered. I used it for a 500kms trip to sicily almost a year ago. Than occasionally to work and on sundays...

I'm sure on Malta, it's considerably more expensive than $30.

I'm the first to say, oil is cheap and engines are expensive, but in this case, given the consistent high annual temperature in Malta, and the fact that the motorcycle is stored indoors, and the fact that maintenance costs are probably triple or quadruple what people in North America would expect to pay, I think it really comes down to personal choice.

Malta is not exactly what I would call humid, being off the Southern coast of Sicily and if he were to send away an oil sample for analysis, I'm sure the report would be far from catastrophic.

Would it be prudent and good to change it anyway, sure. It would not hurt the motorcycle.

It's really a personal choice.

Having worked where their was an oil analysis unit, I had a few samples of oil from my motorcycles analyzed. Based on the findings, the recommended intervals are very conservative and the oil could be used for many more miles.

Yup.

Of course everyone needs to consider their own operating conditions.

I have only ever seen mayo in my Jackal, when commuting only 20-30 minutes in dead of winter (below freezing).

YMMV, but I suspect the recommendations are conservative.

For me personally, if you ever did ride in the rain and/or humid condition for whatever reason, I would still change it out.

for 40~50 bux of oil and maybe 30 mins of labour, you get a cheap insurance of knowing you have a clean oil to start after winter.

But that is me...YMMV

LOL.

I don't think people realize just how small Malta is. It's an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea of only about 125 square miles total size. If he lives on Malta, the main island, then it's about 11 miles long by 6 miles across, at its widest points. I know he's not on Comino, but if he were on Gozo, well, it don't get much smaller than that.

His big trip, was North over to Sicily, another island but much bigger than Malta,
