You can, BTW, replace it with the same nut that's on the output shaft and use a conventional hex socket. Also, the peg nut that secures the crank sprocket can be replace with a hex nut that goes in the same place on a Daytona. Don't like peg nuts myself.
You can. I have done that replacement on a variety of 5-speeds, including an Eldo just this afternoon. The P/N listing on the MG Cycle web site notes the alternative use, it's also mentioned in Guzziology. As for locking, I still bend the tabs against the hex flats on the nut on installation, but also use Locktite.

I use the output shaft nut as well. Much easier to torque to the proper spec. I grind off the thin section that was used to lock it and apply Loctite only - no lock washer of any sort.
