Found my air filter plugged with disintegrated neoprene "ash" and two 3-inch long strips. Amazing the bike was able to breath and run as well as it did. The square air cleaner cover top-side neoprene (acoustic insulation?) appeared intact. Luckily the air filter did it's job with the engine side being spotless. Being new to the bike I'm puzzled of it's origin and would appreciate any insight.
Thanks

The two strips normally reside just inside the top of the airbox lid above the rubber intake boot. The rest I have no idea if the foam of the internal lid is intact.

There have been a lot of people, myself included, who have found these strips in the airbox the first time they take the tank off. I think this hole was just a useful trash can during assembly.

Mine are still there after 10 years. I always thought of them as acoustic and left them alone. I like a quiet induction sound.
Perhaps a difference in assembly around how well they were glued down.
Having said that I will check in the next few days as I want to replace the air filter. They may not be glued at all.
Edit. I do remember a post a long time ago about mice nesting in an airbox and this might be a cause.

My memory is stretching, but isn't there some sort of material glued to the bottom of the fuel tank? It might be deteriorating and going into the air filter.

Dave, I didn't think to look under the tank for a couple of reasons but that makes perfect sense. Removing the tank for the first time and setting it down securely with a couple of gallons of gas in it while trying not to put any load on the side plastic "sponsons" was the one reason. The other was reason was I was too preoccupied with removing a broken wooden dowel from the cylinder as a result of being stupid :-(

The foam under my tank was , I think, grey but it definitely stripped off as I was riding along and ended up in the air filter. Nearly killed me as it did it in all at once and choked the air supply to the engine as I was cutting through peak hour traffic.
