My Guzzi has driven me a special type of batty trying to work out what is wrong with the handling. The rear end was way to soft and that has been sorted with a respring/revalve. It improved things but it still had a wobbly front end. (didn't inspire confidence at all!!! Ride at speed at your own peril!) My first thought was spring/dampening rates because I am heavy and the back was so far off. I had checked all the usual suspects previously- wheel bearings/swingarm/steering head bearings...
Rode to Brisbane on it yesterday and thought on the way home- this can't be springing- something is loose in the front end. (or the fork bushes are flogged out- shouldn't be at 41000km though) Checked the fork clamps today and they were spot on. However the front axle was slightly loose (80Nm it should have been) and the right fork pinch bolts were nowhere near tight enough.

I checked the four rear wheel bolts while at it- they were good. (single sided arm) Whoever changed the last front tyre was asleep. Gotta love used bikes! Previous owner had the valve clearances set backwards too. Easy to do on a V twin with a cylinder each side- exhaust valve is on the left on the left of the bike and right on the right side of the bike.
Turns out I can't take the front wheel out with my current (large) tool set- callipers are held on with 7mm allen bolts. Bloody Italians!

:( Off to the toolshop I go!

Yes, well known fact that the B11/12S’ weak link is front & rear suspension. I fixed many almost 10 years ago already. My offerings from Matris here on the Store are well worth the buy in.

Tony the 7mm allen keys are not a common thing. wot-a-lot-a-crap (SuperCheap auto) only have it in a set, and the set is made from cream cheese. Try a specialist tool supplier that has a 1/4" drive key unit to round out your set (I don't mean round out your bolts either - this was done to me some years back, by a Guzzi "service agent". Obviously didn't have a 7mm, so ground down an 8mm, and totally stuffed the screws. Come on down easyout!).

Mario (Thunderbikes, WA) generally has 2 in stock at around $12 each - special Brembo part.

Thanks Tony. I bought a key to keep on the bike and a 1/2 inch drive 7mm for my tool set. I checked that the bolts were tight. Might have to see if I can loosen them before I have to. Hmmm.

As a progress report I'm pretty happy with the bike now. Rode it for the last couple of days for work and it was comfy and a pleasure to ride. Went out last night two up and it didn't come even remotely close to scraping like it used to. Went pretty hard to see how it would behave. Have to try some fast riding to be sure but so far it is great. :)
