Tuned and Synch'ed
My Guzzi has driven me a special type of batty trying to work out what is wrong with the handling. The rear end was way to soft and that has been sorted with a respring/revalve. It improved things but it still had a wobbly front end. (didn't inspire confidence at all!!! Ride at speed at your own peril!) My first thought was spring/dampening rates because I am heavy and the back was so far off. I had checked all the usual suspects previously- wheel bearings/swingarm/steering head bearings...
Rode to Brisbane on it yesterday and thought on the way home- this can't be springing- something is loose in the front end. (or the fork bushes are flogged out- shouldn't be at 41000km though) Checked the fork clamps today and they were spot on. However the front axle was slightly loose (80Nm it should have been) and the right fork pinch bolts were nowhere near tight enough.
I checked the four rear wheel bolts while at it- they were good. (single sided arm) Whoever changed the last front tyre was asleep. Gotta love used bikes! Previous owner had the valve clearances set backwards too. Easy to do on a V twin with a cylinder each side- exhaust valve is on the left on the left of the bike and right on the right side of the bike.
Turns out I can't take the front wheel out with my current (large) tool set- callipers are held on with 7mm allen bolts. Bloody Italians!
Off to the toolshop I go!
