Good evening all from a newbie. When I bought my 850T a few years ago, I was told that it had a lightened flywheel. The bike has been running rough for a while and I thought i'd do some basics, like checking the static timing. Manuel says to set ignition timing by locating regard mark for each piston on flywheel and making sure corresponding point closes to pass current. So I pop off the timing inspection cap and low and behold, there a no timing marks on the flywheel at all. No problem I thought. I installed my degree dial on the crank shaft, found TDC for both pistons and added those marks on flywheel. Now I'd like to add retard and advance marks, but I can't find any info on web on how many degrees from TDC they should be. Anyone know? Thanks for any advice. -Paul

From Haynes workshop manual; 850T and Le Mans - 8 deg retarded to 34 deg advanced.
And for T3 - 2 deg retarded to 33 advanced.
Hope this helps.

Thank you John and fiat500. The bike has been running very hot, and will not idle without throttle stop screw turned all the way in. I thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt carbs. Compression is 150psi for both cylinders. I'm hoping that proper timing setup (ignition and valves) will rectify issue. Very excited! Thanks again. Btw fiat500, this is my first 850T. I rode a friends 850T briefly. Mine was definitely quicker off the line and at speeds up to 60mph. I didn't get to ride his bike faster than that so I'm not sure about high speed torque, but would assume his would have more. -Paul

I fitted a lightened flywheel to my Le Mans II, bought from HMB Guzzi in Germany. The engine picks up so much easier now, making the bike a much better ride. This flywheel obviously came with no timing marks either.
I used a piston stop made from an old spark plug and a timing wheel to find exactly where the TDC's were and then used these to add the timing marks. The bike still uses points and never misses a beat.
Even the original flywheel's timing marks were a degree or two out from true.
