With bike on stand (engine NOT running!) turning rear wheel by hand -or- pushing bike in neutral: i hear what i would describe as a regularly occuring muted deep pitched clicking sound coming from the drive train.

The sound seems to be coming from the driveshaft area. I would appreciate your thoughts what the source of this sound is.. Or, is it normal ? (I would think not..)

The rear drive oil has no evidence of water contamination. There are no oil leaks. There is no untoward sound or noise when driving the motorcycle.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Anyone have an answer for this post from awhile ago ?

Now if the rear wheel is off the ground with the suspension hanging I guess the UJ,s will be working pretty hard and you will get some noise but I have just notices this same muted regular knock as I wheel the bike around my garage. Cant say I have noticed before.

A faint clicking is not unusual, but not all bikes will present this. If it is loud however, especially when hot, that is an issue. Last year I came across a Black Eagle that after riding had a very loud click. I referred him to a dealer and the drive shaft (different design from CARC bikes) was replaced under warranty.

Yes, the CARCs are clunky when not under power. However, on high mile bikes, it’s worth checking the u-joint.

Steve, Putting your bike on the (assume) centre stand and turning you rear wheel will cause this sound. This is an unnatural position for the wheel/drive train to be in, so expect some weird noises. This is normal. But, as Todd says, if you have good mileage it might be worth pulling it for a look see.

A number of people have reported virtually no grease on the splines of the drive shaft (surprise, surprise - also the steering head bearings and the swing arm bearings and the dog bone bearings et al). It might be that also. Pull it, check it, grease it, assemble it, go ride. Same applies to all the other points mentioned.

Tony,

I think Steve is long gone.

That said, Fiat500 and others likely appreciate your input.

Oh, and as Norge guy who has had a CARC go south ... thankfully under warranty ... I know scary noise when I hear it.

For example, if you hear a "siren" not coming from an LEO to your rear ;), be very afraid. :sweating::swear:

What the OP and Fiat described sounds, IMO, as you suggest.

Thanks, too, for greasing reminder. Doing that to Stornello next week. We all know this is not on Mandello's QC list, and, I'm my case, the dealer didn't do squat.

Bill

Funnily enough my name is Steve also, spooky I know !

Tony, I have had all of the rear end out a year or so ago, replaced swing arm and some of the linkage bearings and give it all a good greasing including the splines.
Had someone with the same year 1200 Sport raise the rear wheel and turn it over and they get the same muted knock so not as worried but as I said, I can't remember hearing it before as I wheel the bike around then again I may just have not been listening for it.
I will remove the CARC anyway and have a look just to be sure.

I have a 2007 Breva 1100 and there is no noise when I push mine in neutral, but a friend who has the same year and model , in fact one serial number different, that does make a noise and has done since new. The drive shaft was replace under warranty in 2007. Swinging arm and all linkages have been regularly greased. To me it sounds like is coming from the gearbox , anyway his bike has done over 100,000Kms of trouble free motoring so we don't worry about it anymore. Kevin
