Foam on Fuel Tank Underside

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the foam is on the fuel tank underside?

With time and heat it has pretty much disintegrated an serves only to clog the air cleaner (see attached photos).

I have since removed the remaining foam with the gooey adhesive that held it there using lots of Goo-Gone......what a PITA!

Since the foam didn't have a heat-reflective covering like on my Triumph, my guess would be it served as a sound insulator (but there's little difference in the sound level) or possibly to prevent contact between the tank underside and what lives underneath but there's no sign of any wear marks on the tank and it appears not to be touching anything from what I could see on re-assembling the tank.

I would appreciate any feedback and if I shouldn't be running without it.

Thanks, Tony D.

The foam on my tank stripped off in one go - nearly killed me as I was changing lanes on a bridge in peak hour traffic and the bike lost almost all power. This happened about 5 years ago and I haven't noticed any issues
