Dealer or Factory mistake with gearbox oil?

I'm just performing my first service on my 2016 V7 II Stone and when I drained the gearbox oil, hardly anything came out. I believe it should have had 500ml in it, but it wasn't even close.

Is this something the dealer would have done prior to delivery, or was it a factory mistake?

There is a screen inside of the drain plug. See the parts diagram online.
Make sure you pull that or not all of the oil will drain out. I suspect this is a big reason for many of the overfill scenarios as well.

I already had the screen out, thanks.

It’s always parked in my garage and there have never been any drips on the floor, so I don’t think it leaked out.

Improper fill then.

I suppose it wouldn’t do any good to report it in case of problems down the road... It’s not like I can prove anything.

In my experience, the gear box doesn't drain well if you leave the filling plug in. This is true of the 6-speed box on the V7II. The 5-speed box on the V7(I) doesn't have this problem. I'll bet that when you remove the filling plug, the rest of the oil will gush out.

I actually had the filling plug out, thanks. I flushed some fresh oil through before doing the final fill... at least there wasn't any metal shrapnel coming out.

Yeah, probably a bit low on the fill at the factory. If you didn't see much in way of metal shavings, etc, there's likely nothing to say about it; I wouldn't worry.

This is one of the important reasons to always do a good, complete first service: make sure everything is up to spec early in the bike's service life. Most dealers do a pretty casual initial setup (with usually the least experienced tech in the shop), relying on the factory to get most of these details near enough correct—good enough for break-in and six hundred miles of mostly gentle riding.
