Painting a Griso

Has anyone ever had a custom paint job on a Griso? If so what was the approximate cost and how much work did you perform yourself (stripping the bike down, sanding parts, etc)?

The one thing that I don't like about the 2016 is the color. They just don't speak to me. I have an idea for a custom paint job based on a vintage race livery that I think would look pretty good. Don't have it mocked up yet.

Also if you have ever done a livery style paint job were your logos and what not decals with clear over them or painted on?

This would not be a home paint job but a professional btw. I understand costs vary just looking for any real world dollars to go off of.

Thanks!

Too many unknown factors like how many colors, what is being painted IE plastic that gets unbolted or frame where stuff has to be taped off, type of paint etc....

That being said you need to budget a grand & if you are having it done by a really good custom shop that may not be enough.

True, a lot of variables. Pretty sure I'm not going down to the frame and will leave it black. I just have never had anything painted so not even sure of the ballpark. I'd be removing all the parts I want painted and leave some up to the shop to tape off (such as the shaft drive if I decide it needs to be painted to match my design).

Thanks.

Only a grand? Have you priced good paint lately? Just the color paint (3 quarts) for my Model T was $800.0 o and that was 7 years ago.

The vinyl coverings by 3M are of high quality. Just an option that will never fade and difficult to scratch. The red option is a close match to the original Guzzi Red. The carbon fiber has depth and real poxy feel and look to it as a cool option. Worth a look see for sure. Good luck.

LOL!!! Guess I'm a bit behind which is not unusual for me.
When I was selling automotive paint it was Acrylic Enamel with a hardner.
Emron (by Dupont I think) was the big buzz word paint.
Clear coat/base coat was just coming onto the market when I was getting out.

What's the latest/greatest system now?

Trout,

Base coat clear coat is still in use. I used single stage on the T. The stuff is really toxic now. I spayed enamel with hardener long ago with just a respirator. The new stuff you need a booth with outside air supplied to the painter. Thus I had it finished by a professional shop.

I used to paint racing motorcycles on the side. As a team we have also had racing motorcycles professionally painted.
A grand would be a single color paint job for a Griso, and it would probably not be that great a job.
We charged less for our paint jobs, but we were painting racebikes, that only needed to look good from 10 feet away and / or while moving really fast. For us the key was a paint job that grabbed your attention from a distance, not one that looked great up close. We would put down a few coats of enamel color (always quality PPG color base coat) and then at least three coats of urethane clear, with wet sanding between the color and the clear and if it was a metallic color we would put clear down on top of it first before wet sanding (wet sanding metallic changes the look).
To put down at least three coats of color and three coats of clear, with wet sanding between, is probably at least a grand. And that is not covering multi-color designs.
Oh, and way back when we were doing this (15 - 20 years ago) it was around $300 in paint our cost to paint a motorcycle. I don't know what it costs nowadays.
