another 1200 sport oil pressure fault query

hi
on my 1200 sport i have an 08 code, oil can and red triangle warning. The bike runs fine.
i have checked the oil pressure with a gauge and it is fine, i have changed the switch, but the code and warning still comes on as soon as i start the engine.
i have checked the oil pressure switch voltage out of the block with the engine ticking over and it is 7.2v. is this too low?
Also on my dash the battery voltage reading is 12.1v when the battery is actually 12.8v, could the dash falsely reading a low voltage be causing the alarm?
i have cleaned and refitted all of the connectors but still no change
any advice would be gratefully received

The oil pressure switch provides a ground path when there is no pressure. The voltage you are getting doesn't tell me anything. Please take a reading with the bike not running with key on and the wire disconnected from the switch. The voltage readings need to be compared between running and connected, and not running and disconnected. It is possible that the new switch is defective. It would also help to that start the bike and take an ohm reading of the switch with the wire disconnected.

Also there was no ohm reading with the wire disconnected and the bike running
I have taken a reading from the wire and it has 6.5 volts with the key on and 7.2 volts with the bike running
Faulty new switch?
 
I need you to ohm the switch with the bike running, it should indicate no continuity. With the engine off, should be close to zero ohms to provide a ground path. If you don't get these readings it is a bad switch. I'm sorry if my previous post wasn't clear enough. There is no such thing as a "no ohm reading" if you are checking the switch. Do you have any experience with circuits or electronics? If not I can provide more detail on how to check these things.

Probably not a true test. Under normal conditions, the system should see no oil pressure (ground path through switch) with the engine not running. If the wire is disconnected, or the switch is in the air the system will think there is oil pressure with the engine not running. That could also trip a fault.

Regarding the switch that is still in the block, does that seem to be working as it should, and if so do you have any suggestions as to where I could check next?
 
08 is oil pressure failure. This means that the contacts are not opening with oil pressure, or of course, there is no oil pressure. It could also mean the wire to the sensor terminal is shorting to earth somewhere.

Sadly when I had that on my Norge it turned out to be a broken oil pump outer rotor.
 
when i tested my oil pressure it had 60psi, so i am happy with that, i am going to start checking the wire for a short
 
My oil light did go off and I rode about 200 miles with no further issue, but on reading about oil pump problems I decided to "go in".

Before I go I to have a look, do you know if the reading I took on the switch wire is normal?
6.5 volts with the key on and 7.2 volts with the engine running.
I was expecting 12v, but I had just assumed that, and we know you shouldn't assume anything.
I'm off driving around the Balkans for a couple of weeks, so I'm going to have a look on my return
 
To be honest, I don't know. But it's supply comes from the ECU so I would expect 12v. There is a possibility it could have been 5 volts, but clearly that isn't the case.
 
stephen99 -- your description of the various measurements are confusing as to what is connected and what isn't. Here's how the oil sensor circuit works:

* Ignition ON; engine OFF: dashboard tests (once) if oil pressure switch is closed to ground; if not DSB 07

* Ignition ON; engine ON: dashboard tests (continuously) if oil pressure switch is open from ground; if not DSB 08

The service manual provides a clear description of oil pressure switch and dashboard operation.

Dobra dan, as the friendly locals have been saying to me for the past few weeks
A quick recap on my issues so far
I have a DSB 08 fault, red triangle and oil can on dash. i have good oil pressure, i have tested the oil pressure switch and it is working fine.
the purple oil pressure wire that goes to the oil pressure switch is reading 6.5v when i turn on the ignition, and 7.2 v when i start the engine.
i am currently wondering if this is the correct voltage.
Also on my dash the battery voltage reading is 12.1v when the battery voltage is actually 12.8v.
having a look at the wiring diagram it looks like both the oil pressure wire and the battery voltage wire seem to go to the same connector block (grey) on the instrument panel. could that be the problem? and if so how easy it it to access?
 
If it was a DSB07 I'd suggest you checked the tightness of the connection between the cable and the switch.
DSB08 is a bit more concerning and I've not had that ....... yet!

Re the voltage. I checked the dash voltage showing against a calibrated meter across the battery terminals and my dash consistently reads 0.5V lower than the calibrated instrument.

I believe it to be a "feature" to keep you sharp and alert provided by the manufacturer ;);)
