Upgrade my modded V7II to a new V7III?

Back in winter of 2017 I bought a new ‘16 V7II stone, and spent the entire winter making all the changes I wanted, and have been pretty happy with the results. Lights, shocks, tires, seat, exhaust, Todd’s wonderful flash tool... the list goes on and on. Thousands of dollars later, I finally had a bike I really enjoyed. - until the missing thrust bearing issue. Unfortunately my bike falls right in the range, and the nearest dealer is over 3 hours away. I figured I was out of the woods since my bike has 10k miles, but I just heard about another bike with the issue that happened at 11k. So I am now in the process of having my bike shipped to the nearest dealer in Maryland (I’m in Central NY). I will have it checked for the missing washer/bearing... but regardless of the outcome I noticed this dealer has a V7III in a beautiful bronze color with the night pack. Since I’m paying to ship my bike there and back, I’m wondering if I should consider upgrading? Not sure what price difference would be, but if I’m a few thousand away from getting a new bike, I just may consider it - and do the mods at my own pace. I can keep the bags, and the seat! But that’s about it... all mods would have to start from scratch... oooh what should I do! Sometimes modifying can be as much fun as riding...

I've thought seriously about selling my '16 V7II Stone and getting something like a Milano. The problem is that I've sunk a lot into the Stone to get it fully sorted, and much of the stuff can't be moved to the V7III. That includes pricy Matris shocks and fork cartridges, Agostini mufflers and crash bar, OEM windscreen and gel saddle, Koso heated grips, and H&B top and side racks. Plus, there's nothing wrong with the Stone. So, for now, I'm keeping it.

Probably the smartest thing to do. I was just quoted $5500 out the door for a 2019 Stone with Night Pack - they would drop off the new bike in my garage, and take the old one back.

I get the impression that you're gonna buy the bike and now you're just looking for justification. Congratulations.

Yeah... sounds like a lot, right? The out the door price for a 2019 Stone w/night pack is around $10k. So $5500 and my bike Includes delivery, and they would pick up my old bike. Otherwise, to get my V7 serviced, I would have to pay around $750 for shipping there and back, plus the service itself which could cost as much as the shipping. Hopefully the test for the missing bearing will be covered by Piaggio.

Called another dealer, and they said $3300 is the most I could get on my trade towards a new bike. So, maybe $5500 out the door plus shipping isn't that bad?

Sib - you sound like my girlfriend. Sad part is, you’re both right. It’s all because of the corona virus! I’m going crazy inside all day.

Keep your bike and spend the money on some other toy or tools.
You'll be riding soon as will I. I've got my Norge in the mudroom\entrance of my house all in pieces. I'm keeping busy doing all the wrenching I procrastinated on all winter. Looking at the long range forecast I figure 1 to 2 weeks max and I'll be "on the road again".

Good advice - I just ordered that crank check tool from AF1 racing for 110 bucks. I’ll bring the bike to my local trusted shop and have him check the clearance for piece of mind. So I guess it looks like I’ll be keeping the V7II for now.

Just an update - I cancelled the order for my crank check tool - I made another counter offer on that V7III. Maybe, just maybe I'll be making the upgrade, then will come all the new parts to be ordered - let's get this economy pumping! (that's my new justification).

Let’s get serious here... $5500 is just the starting price.

+$500 for fueling from Todd. +$500-$1500 for new exhaust. +$2000 for new suspension all around. +$600 for a new helmet, because the old one doesn’t match the new bike. +$600 for a nice new leather jacket, because the old one looks silly with a brand new helmet. +$1000 for an 820cc big bore kit if they come back in stock. +$350 for new lights and signals, because you think they’ll look just 6% cooler than the ones that came on the bike. +$85 for new mirrors, then $225 more because the first ones didn’t end up being as cool as you thought they’d be...

Oh, and don’t forget, when a V7-IV eventually comes out with the 85TT motor, you’ll probably upgrade to that.

(someone please assure me I’m not the only one that operates this way...)

Oh god... this certainly doesn’t help. I guess the truth hurts. Offered the dealer 4500, so let’s see where this goes. If we make a deal, then I’ll tally the rest up. This way I can’t back out. I know myself too well. :)

I really didn’t mean any of that to be an argument against getting the V7III. If anything, I encourage it! Shopping for (and obsessing over) all that extra stuff is part of any hobby for me.

Since I don’t have much else to do during this pandemic lock down, I might as well give myself a hobby. I had so much fun modding my V7II, this time will be even better.

Well, he met me half way and we made a deal! So I’ll be getting the V7III after all. Ordering a set of Heidenau K60’s and having them shipped to the dealer so they can mount them before delivery. The rest I can do on my own. Looks like I wont have to worry about that missing thrust bearing after all...

Congrats! Look forward to you adding your new info to the Registry! Send me your flash tool back for a reset... hopefully you were able to restore the stock map to your old bike. I'd be curious to hear if the motor was bad, as I'd still like the VIN and Engine #'s for that thread.
