Hi, just purchased a 2103 California custom. A previous owner Millie GT. I haven't ridden a guzzi for about 8 years so a huge learning curve. I have changed engine oil penrite10w 60 , filter and gearbox penrite 75w 90 full synthetic and air filter. The drain plug on gearbox had metal slivers along with brass slivers in the oil with metal partials. The wasnt serviced for 18,000 klms by service book. Both oils where dirty :swear:. Any thoughts recommendations?I was thinking change again at 5,000 klms and inspect.

Hi David, I just changed my gearbox oil after a 10,000 km interval and there was some paste and very small slivers stuck to the magnet, this is after 50,000kms in total, just general wear and tear I think. The service book calls for gearbox oil change and engine oil and filter change every 10,000km, I also change just the engine oil at every 5,000km, the sump plug is normally clean. The rear diff oil according to the service book is every 50,000km but because the rear wheel has to be removed and it is such a small amount I do mine every tyre change. I'm also using Penrite, where abouts in Oz are you? I managed to strip my sump plug this service and I wasn't using what I would think is excessive force, be very careful with it.

Hi John, Thanks for your experience with the cali. I was surprised to find metal on plug and in the oil. Good to hear nothing to be concerned about. I'll follow your maintenance schedule. The older guzzi gearboxes didn't need as many oil changes. I'm looking forward to getting a freer flowing exhaust in the near future, the standard pipes are to quite for me. Im north of you in NSW, Camden S/W of Sydney close to the new airport being built. Pictured the mentioned plug with metal slivers.

Can't say for certain it's nothing to worry about mate, that does look pretty bad but if it hasn't been changed for at least 18,000kms maybe that is why. Looking at that it looks like it has never been changed, how many Kms has it got on it? I think I would be changing it again after 500kms or so just to make sure it is cleaner next time and to help flush out any more crap that is in there. If the gearbox is quiet and shifts smoothly it should be ok.

Hello,
Yesterday I changed Gearbox oil and I had also small amount of metal slivers. So I guess it is normal. I changed gearbox oil after 10000km oil looks pretty clear. I had no metal slivers in engine oil.
btw. Guys how do measure the amount of gearbox oil? there is no dipstick, manual says "when the level is near to filling hole"

Yes, add oil until it just starts to run out of the filler hole, should be about 500ml.

This gets repeated over and over and over ad nauseam here. Do NOT fill until it comes out of the fill hole, it will be overfull. See the Service manual for capacities, and deduct 50cc. Better yet is to measure what you drain and only refill what drains. Not all of the oil will come out, and overfilling causes many problems.

Todd,

Is that the case for 1200 8V motors as well? Fill to fill cap on gearcase side then minus 50ml?

The right oil for the gear, is 85W90 GL5 🤷🏼‍♂️

This is the correct answer!!

It didn’t leak, it didn’t break - put the same amount you drain out back in!
