I am about to fill my 94 calli with engine oil. My owners manual says to use 10-40 synthetic, my question is, is it better to use a 20-50 or 60 synthetic? Or is everybody going by the book? My 83 HD Shovelhead calls for 20-50w but at the time the manual was printed , there was no 20-60w to be had and now I run 60w in that bike . Should I up the viscosity in my Guzzi?

Synthetic oil is superior in all aspects except price, and almost impossible to break down. However, it may be overkill for your bikes, and if they are happy so far, why change?

I have been using 10-40w synthetic but just wanted to know if the other oil options would be better because I do ride when the ambient temp is 100 F. At those temps I wandered if 20-50, or 60w, would be better and ok run when the temps are more normal 60- 80* ambient.

When I lived in IL I ran 10/40 in winter and 20/50 as soon as temps stay +40F, in GA it's 20/50 all the time.

I think you will be fine with 10-40. The Big Block was designed as the italian military/police bike. Part of the spec is that it has to sit at idle in hot italian weather all day. I've never seen a big block cook its oil. Unless you are racing or live in the danikil depression, special oil or an oil cooler is not required.
