V7 Classic rear wheel not engaging at all

I realize this may not be the same bike - but it’s the thought that counts.

I was thinking the drive shaft connected directly to the pinion gear in the final drive unit .
In this image I see it’s isolated and drives a piece that connects to the unit.

I have never seen one as bad as that, on bikes with far higher mileages and much older.
You have to pull the swinging arm off the gearbox to get the drive shaft out. Not difficult, but possibly worth checking every few years.
 
Gremlins pouring water into the swing arm in the dead of night ? :devil:

What would/should have been in there from the factory, grease on the splines where they mate with the cup ?
The universal at the othe end would be sort of a sealed unit.
That whole assembly should have just been clean and dry ..
Was the rubber boot/seal by the uni cracked/torn ?

Maybe have a look every othe tire changes ?
 
I've never seen a Guzzi driveshaft so badly corroded on any bike that hadn't been submerged for a time.

That amount of rust says first neither the driveshaft nor the engaging splines were ever greased, and second that the boot or some other component was allowing a lot of water to get into the driveshaft tube in the swingarm. And that the bike sat in that condition for a good while too.

I would check all the seals, boot, and parts and bearings in the swing arm and replace the drive shaft. Grease the splined couplings and put a thin coating of grease on the driveshaft itself to prevent corrosion in the future.
