Norge oil pump rotor replacement?

Copy of edit just made to my 9/22/10 post this thread summarizing what I knew then:

[EDIT 10/2/10-NOW CONFIRMED ONE FAILURE BUILD DATE APRIL OR MAY 07, THE FIRST-& SO FAR ONLY-CONFIRMED ONE OUTSIDE OF THE PREV KNOWN 10-11/06 BUILD CLUSTER. I'M HOPING THIS TURNS OUT TO BE LIKE THE CARC FAILURES, IE MOST ALL FROM A KNOWN BAD SUPPLY AROUND A KNOWN TIME PERIOD & RECALLED AS SUCH, BUT TURNED OUT A VERY FEW OF THE OLD BAD PARTS APPARANTLY HUNG AROUND & GOT SLIPPED IN BIKES OUTSIDE THE KNOWN RECALL PERIOD.]

Unfortunately (for most of us here) not in English.

Sorry ... the original article has been published in French and in Dutch, no other languages.

Would anyone here also replace the timing chain while "in-there" doing the oil pump swap?
My Norge has 25K miles on it.

If you see wear, why not. But IIRC, that chain is supposed to last quite a bit more than 25k miles!

Thank you Bill.

After reading all of this, I may not be taking the Norge to the WV rally at Pipestem after all. It's a long way from home to have the problem manifest itself.
After I hear from healeyblue, I may just order a new oil pump, and then wait for John Wells' photographic documentation (including video) of his oil pump replacement project. ;)

Nick

Bill, Did John Wells ever produce a photo/video of his oil pump replacement? I searched for same but nothing comes up on the forum.

Simple enough thing to do, I did mine at home with basic tools. The workshop manual does explain most of what you need to know.
The most difficult thing I came across was getting the correct timing cover gasket, shop supplied two different ones, both wrong. I ended up modifying one.

I can't imagine it's a difficult job...pretty straight forward. It's the little tips and cautionary's that help the job go easier so was hoping to see that in the pics/videos.

Biggest problem I had, it was cold and when I came to refit it, the platic alternator belt cover didn't fit, bolt holes didn't line up. Had to warm the plastic to expand it.

Thanks for the 'heads-up'.

Apologies for being late to this party.

Being granddad to 13 -- even in Covid Days -- is busy work. :giggle:

Seriously, that and other tasks have kept me away.

Wait a minute, just saw your (2veloce) statement in a related thread about going to "wider audience." If you knew my belt size, you might think there could be no wider audience! :tmi:

Not sure how much riding you want to do on that sweet but maddening beast now that things are getting chilly, but consider making your Norge a project bike at Moto Grappa Tech Days IV, an annual event in February or so here at the top of Virginia. We usually just putz with my moto-harem or a few others, but your work would be a perfect job. We could do Nick's at the same time.

You could trailer it up and we could get it all done in a couple of days with Dr. John, Nick, and others to do the e heavy lifting.

See these for an idea of MGTD activities:
