Micro-fiber cloth

Word of caution from a self-confessed 20:20 hindsight idiot.

if your bike is wet and you start to dry it with a micro-fibre (UK spelling) cloth. Don’t let the cloth swing and land on the red hot headers.

No material is harder or more solvent resistant than melted polyester.

In the end the only answer was a Stanley knife blade, followed by wire-wool, WD40, and Solvol metal polish.

So they’re almost ok. Skates-on-ice micro scratches but I have worn through the baked on polyester.

and yes... I tried cellulose thinners, nail polish remover, and petrol (gas).

You're not the first and you won't be the last.
One of the first things I did with my new Audace was hang my jacket on the handlebar after a ride - you can guess what happened next. Fortunately only the inside of the jacket touched the header so no major damage, but it was a PITA to scrape the crap off the header afterwards (just like Paul said above)

Yep, did the same when I put the bike cover on without checking if the headers were still hot, those things take a looong while to cool down.

It's reassuring to know that I'm not alone. But my heart goes out to you all. It is a first-world problem, and the world has bigger fish to fry right now, but it's very annoying, damaging and time consuming.

So... if you're among the 5% who haven't melted something onto your headers, be careful.

Pipes are basically self-cleaning. I had some Gore-tex type material melted to one of my headers. I just kept riding until it burned itself off.
