The last time we decided to have a few days away in Mallorca, it was cut short due to Spain announcing the State of Alarm so we had to cut and run back to Menorca.
As the Covid situation had improved somewhat we thought we would resume our trip. We booked the same apartment (secure parking for the bike) in Puerto Alcúdia a five minute drive from the ferry port and within walking distance of all local amenities such as bars, restaurants and shops.
Mallorca is an island that relies very much on tourism and to a large extent cyclotourism. Many international and national cycling teams use Mallorca for winter training and many hotels cater specifically for cyclists with secure storage, wash down facilities and even workshops. During peak times and especially at week ends it is not unusual to see hundreds of these Lycra clad road warriors, many who have no consideration for other tax paying road users, hogging the public highways. But I digress, Covid has had a devastating effect on the local economy and I would estimate that 95% of all bars, restaurants, hotels and shops certainly in the area where we were had closed, their season for this year was well and truly over.
With little or no traffic, stunning weather and wide open roads was the order of the day. Also managed to get in a ride up to the Gorg Blau in the Tramontana mountains and of course avail ourselves of the local tapas, even spotted a baby Guzzi outside a bar where the owner was taking a coffee.
Deja vu, another State of Alarm has just been announced (expected to be in force until May, unless things improve), but at least we are home now although under curfew from 2300 to 0600.
Stay safe all.
