After reading about the side panel breaking near the front I took a look at mine. There is a crack emanating from a stress riser at the mount. I assume that they will all break there, eventually. I'm going to reinforce this area with fiberglass. I'd recommend you do, too.. ;)

Thanks Chuck, can you pull back the camera so we can get a better reference to the location/of the part?

Say, you folks think there would be enough interest in getting one of the 'glass moto body folks to make/offer these? I have enough laying around now to send them for a mold. Thoughts?

Thanks Chuck, I revised it with an arrow, and hosted it here. Hey, nice photo "stand." ;)

I know Jesse James has done one, but you should fit it into a Guzzi, eh?

The panels are made of ABS. Normal GRP will not adhere to this too well.
It would be better to weld another sheet of ABS to the back using a solvent weld liquid. All available from model shops.
Unless your health and safety regulations ban the solvent weld liquid.

Chuck, JB Weld works very well on the ABS, I used the original formula, I reinforced all the tabs and stress points, So far so good.

Both my original panels cracked around where the 'funnel' for the upper bolt (upper left in the picture above) meets the outer surface. I found a kneadable 2-component weld (Patterson "liquid iron") that's perfect for filling up the empty space around the funnel, which ought to prevent the cracking. I also reinforce the tab that prolongs the upper horizontal bit (it's pointing at the white cloth in the picture).

Todd: I'd say hold a poll or something to see just how many people might be interested. It's true that with Piaggio refusing warranty claims on these items, that crack even with regular use, it'd be good to have a cheaper and possibly quicker source. And, glass-fibre can be repaired, which is good. I wonder how much a full fairing would cost from them?

Left and rightside panels are cracked on my Norge and now I want a set of new panels in real carbonfiber.
Maybe in a new design with the reach to the oilstick easier.
Can somone make it?
Skidmarx?

Whilst I fully agree that the Norge fairing is an abomination, both in design and manufacture, I fear that the commercial set up costs of making one in GRP or Carbon Fibre would be astronomic, given the low production numbers. This would be even more so if the design were modified to make life easier, which it should be.

I would think they would be horribly expensive to make, too. And, yes, the design is poor. Not enough thought was given to sizes of stiffeners, strength of the mounting tabs, etc. Not to mention, to take off the lower plastic, you have to start on the right side, then take off the chin fairing before removing the left side, which *as designed* has to be done to check the oil.
At any rate, the repair/reinforcement is easy enough to do.. and after all, it's just a fairing, IMHO.

Chuck,

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to check the SMC resin out. I have been using Plastex brand plastic repair and fiberglass tape - which is working out well so far.
