Hello all,

I picked up my 2008 1200 Sport (Black) last month (thanks to John and the great team at SeaCoast Sport Cycles in NH) and have been lurking for a bit. Hell of a blast of a bike. A far cry from the V-Twin in my V-Strom. I've loved longitudinal V-Twins ever since that CX-650 Custom Honda back in the 80's and now I have the original longitudinal V-
Twin item.

Just shut her down after 650 mile maintenance requirement. Tough not to ride until I tear her apart for some tuning. Getting to be a bit chilly in New England though...

Cheers all!

Welcome to the madness/congrats(!), and I guess some irony there on the CX. I was fairly young when the the CX-650 Custom came out, but the desire was there... and then was quickly side-burner-ed when CX-Turbos arrived. Did you know that Honda built a dirt-tracker out of a CX motor? They turned it 90 degrees though... see below.
My first ride aboard a Guzzi was in '93, and I knew one day, I'd own one. This past Sept. marks the tenth year Anniversary of ownership, and now with well over 200k miles on the handful of those now in my garage. Careful, it's an addiction with no recourse. Hope you'll add your Sport to the Registry (top upper right tab), and look forward to many more posts from you... welcome and congrats again.

If you have any tuning questions, fire away. Do you have the VDST yet?

1981 / HONDA NS750 This machine was specially developed for AMA dirt track racing. It used a modified OHV 4-valve engine from the CX500, the export version of the GL500, and was the predecessor of the chain-drive RS750D.

Thanks for the welcome! This is a great forum and I appreciate the info I've recieved already. I'm registered now in the registry. The VDST is a soon to be purchased item as I'll be doing my own maintenance (can't let the time/$ I spend at MMI rust away).

I purchased the MG centerstand but have yet to find much in the way of a installation procedure though forum searches. Any ideas on installation instructions as (like everyone else it seems) the box came with none?

My pleasure... and you're a MMI Grad eh? Great!

On the center-stand, most Italian products come with little to no instructions... so it's learn as you go. Take pics and document it for us here. I'd say bolt it up, and with it in the "up" position, use a spring tool to install the springs. Are they the dual spring set-up? If so, they're impressively tight even when it's in the up position.

Welcome from the dark side of the world.

Lotsa tech heads here to help (but you already knew that I'm sure). Speak up often and holler even louder if you don't get answers, someone will come along sooner or later.

Man I woulda like to ride that NS750 dirt bike - wooooohooooo!

Welcome from the UK. If I might be cheeky, there is a dedicated forum for the 1200 Sport and you'll be welcome there as well. Just use the link given below in my signature and have a browse. Between the two site, this one and ours, you'll have the best of both worlds.

Hi Wirebiter
Welcome

I had a 1200 on loan a few months back super machine , just a little tight for me :D

Anyway get your main stand on and bolted, don't forget to grease the spindle.
You sometimes have to remove part or even all of the exhaust.
If you haven't got a spring tool:
Take the large spring, holding each end bend it over. Get a buddie to put a series of pennies in the spaces.
About ten will do nicely. I should be long enough now to hook over the lugs. Thread the small spring though the large one and hook on with a screw driver.

Job done ;)

Also a welcome from "the old continent" Check the bolts of your centre stand on a regular base, they will come lose, due to the mighty power of your Guzzi  I've lost one already and one of my hugger.... Just a minor price you pay for truckloads of fun! :side:

Don't use the parts manual for guidance on the centerstand installation, right side is changed using a couple less parts. I like the penny trick, I struggled with a pair of pliers. I also substituted a couple of longer bolts with a locknut on the back to resist anything coming loose.

I also had a DL1000 a few bikes back, seems like a great idea but did not pan out for me. I think you will find this bike to be much more rewarding.

Wirebiter - good to see you got the fast one and not the red!

Yep, I'm happy I got the black one too. Tough choice in the beginning though as I had it in my head that if it was Italian, it had to be red. The engine is what does it though, NOT the color. What a torquey plant with grande soul!

Hello, being a member of this forum for nearly a month, I like to introduce myself before I reply somewhere else on this forum. I found no specific topic, so I hope wirebiter don't mind I use his. . .
I live in a small town in The Netherlands (wich is also small by U.S. standards. . .).
We bought our first Guzzi in 2001, it was a California EV. After that there was a Breva1100 from August 2005 to October 2006. For some reason I needed a Guzzibreak, wich means there was a Triumph Trophy900 instead of the Breva. This year there was an offer I couldn't resist. So, since August there's a black 1200Sport in my garage, we've made a nice trip to France on it. Sold the Triumph last week.
Other bikes in my garage are a 750Breva, V50Nato (nearly sold) an a Nuovo Falcone Sahara.
I hope my English is not to difficult for you. ;)

Welcome aboard Martin, sometimes our English is even better........
Never had any bad comments on my English, this is a Guzzi-forum not an English language forum.
Just kind Guzzisti here.

Hello Martin,

There are a few more Dutch owners on the 1200 Sport forum, so you'd be welcome to join us.
