Guys,

Im not real hot on ride reports or much of a photographer but here gos.

Anyway we set off on 12 November 09 from Singapore for Phuket (1500klm) where we put my Stelvio :D and Colins Rocket 3 on a pick up truck and sent them to Chiang Mai in North Thailand. Emiel would fly directly to CM and rent a Kawa ER6N, Colin returned to Singapore for work commitments and I flew up to CM to meet the wife who flew in from Singapore for a few days touring just the 2 of us before the others arrived the following weekend. We had a ball. If anybody has been to Thailand I am guessing you have been to Bangkok or Phuket or the usual tourist spots full of bars & hookers, not actually much wrong with that  . This area in the north is amazing and something we dont get much of in this part of Asia, cool mountainious riding conditions. Anyway this is going to be short and I hope the pictures do the talking. Basically the highlights of the trip were the highest spot in Thailand 2500m, The Mae Hong Song loop which is well knowen by all Asian bikers and of coarse the Golden Triangle. This is the area bordering Thailand , Myanmar (Burma) and Laos and was up untill the late 80's the major supplier of opum for the drug trade. This has pretty well all been cleaned up and its mostly tourism now. The military posts between are interisting, the Thai guys are quite friendly but the Burmese were waving at us not to take photos. Anyway enjoy the pice, If anybody iskeen on visiting this part of the worle just drop me a line and Im happy to help out.

As for the Stelvio, what an amazing bike. I love this bike. I had a 06 Ducati S4R and a 07 HD Fatoby as well as the Stelvio in the garrage. I promised the wife I would go back to 1 bike after the trip. The S4R is already gone and the HD is on the market. Not much else to say really. Not a single problem with the bike so she is staying. I picked it up for almost half the new price with only 1500klm on it. The original owner didnt like it as it was "too unreliable" as he had to replace cams and the starter motor in the first 1000klm. Guess he sorted it out for me and I will buy him a beer if we ever meet.

Peter.

Peter, FANTASTIC! I just stumbled on your post here. Welcome and congrats on such a nice ride and post. Hope to see your posts more often.

Hi Gang

Bloody great photos :D
You do know that Red Stelvios would get there quicker

PS> How did the Rocket perform in the hat dry climate?

Loftyjohn

Great, indeed! And way too few photos still ;) Can we presume you've put the lot of them in some online album (with little captions and possible location tags)?

OK lets have another go with some captions.

Hey Lofty, The R3 was a real surprise. Emiel on the Kawa did this trip last year on his HD Roadking, he also has a R3. He decided to rent the smaller bike based on that experience. Colin is usually a passive rider but he had no trouble keeping up. I could get away from him in the twisties but any sort of a straight and he was right behind me. We were real surprised. The little Kawa performed well but it had 5000klm on it and the tyers. We did 3000klm up there so his tyers were completly shot with 2 days to go so he had to take it easy after that. It was great in the twisties and kept up but as soon as we could open it up a little we left him behind, maybe it was the tyers, a great little bike...

I was talking on here before we went regarding the fuel. The Stelvio went OK on the 95/E10. It took about 50 - 80Klm to settle down and the first tank had me worried as it coughed and farted a bit but was OK after that even if down on power compared to the 98 we run here in Singapore. We had to run 2 tanks of 91 petrol (not E10) at one stage and surprise surprise, I think the Stelvio ran better on that compared to the 95/E10. Power was the same but it didnt ping and stumble as much. I did notice on a uphill pull under load if the RPM was under 5K it would ping and rattle but if you ease the power on once it got over 5,000RPM it pulled like a schoolboy. Remember we weree also running between 700 - 2500m alt also.

heres some more pics.

Hey PJ, thanks for taking the time to post this up - I just live for ride reports like that.

I see you were near the Myanmar border - what's the go, do you recon they are ever going to let independant bike riding travelers in?

enough photos for you yet.....

Hi Mike,

I dont see them opening the Myanmar border for a long time. The military Junta is very paranoid and have a lot more on there mind other than letting us in. We are not real worried about it as we have Cambodia and Laos on the other side which offer excellent riding conditions similar to what I have posted here. Actually we are just in the middle of planning a trip to Ankor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia in February. Should take us about 4 days to get there then on the way back call into Pattaya in Thailand for Pattaya Bike Week, should be a 10 day trip. We have to get in as many trips as possible as the dry season up there ends around end Feb. Problem is its our wet season down here in Singapore / Malaysia so its usually a wet ride up.

Peter.

Great pics and write up

Shows to me that it's the spirit of the riders, not what they ride that makes a ride great.
