My '06 B1100 has an ongoing starter problem. Twice the starter has begun blowing fuses. Both times I've replaced the starter with a different starter and the problem went away. The first time I replaced the original starter (Valeo #1) with a new Valeo (Valeo #2). The second time I replaced Valeo #2 with Valeo #1, and now Valeo #1 was working fine. A few months pass and now at random times when I press the started button, the starter engages and then stops. Usually it only takes a second press of the starter button for the starter to work normally. Needless to say, I am simply waiting for the starter to begin blowing fuses like it did before.

I'm stumped. What could cause these starters to work normally, then begin blowing fuses, but again work normally at a later date? Why is the current starter (Valeo #1) again acting up, only now just failing to engage sporadically?

Do you still have the original battery fitted? The latest issue is typical of a low battery.

Never had this problem on my 1100 - Battery is marginal if left for even a few days without a trickle charge but it has always reached the point where the ECU detects low voltage (or amps .. whatever is monitored) and stops the starting process and all that happens is 'click'

Brian - to increase my (sketchy) electrical knowledge - what would be causing the blown fuses - am i right to guess that theres still enough power so that the ECU doesnt stop the start process therefore the starter tried to start the bike but the lack of enough ooomph from the battery overloaded the circuit ?

Clean the ground connection above where the starter mounts. If it persists, have the battery load tested. With a DVM, what is your battery voltage before you try to start, and then after?

The blowing fuses bit is still a mystery to me. My Norge did it for the first time yesterday. No idea why, but at least having read about the problem I knew where to look immediately.
That fuse is rated at 15A, and supplies the starter solenoid plus the side lights. Now I don't know for certain, but I would say that it is a bit small for that, as the solenoid does pull a heavy current, though I have not yet measured it.
In my case, I had the side stand down and put it into gear so the engine stalled. I was just moving it a couple of feet in the parking bay. I tried to restart without thinking, and that's when it all failed. Don't know if this is significant.

Among other things, my B has stopped starting again. Was ok for a little while, but back to stranding me in the middle of no where.

Fed up...

I think it might. I have always thought this was related to something down near the side stand. Might be coincidence, but...
