Hi everyone. i have a 2002 Stone with 77,000 km on it, which has always run great. Took it to Sturgis this year. Anyway, I went to go for a ride and it fired up and idles great. In gear and moving, it bogs and backfires, can't go anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?

Scooter, welcome to the Forum. It certainly sounds like (but not limited to) a fuel problem. Could be either water in the fuel, to a fuel filter or even fuel pump related. Do you have the means to do some simple tests? Replacing the fuel and/or fuel filter is a simple means to eliminate those from the equation, see; https://www.guzzitech.com/FuelFilterReplace-Rich_A.html

Sort of sounds to me like an out of adjustment or failing TPS.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll try them out this weekend and let you know what worked.

Hi guys. Well I spent the weekend replacing the fuel filter and draining the gas tank, putting in new gas. Same thing - the bike idles and revs great but will not respond under load. I even put the back wheel off the ground and put it through all five gears - no problem. It only will not respond when it is put under load.
Any other ideas?

Still would look at the petcock, sounds like it is not getting enough gas that a load requires

any luck, scooter??

i am having the exact same problem with my 2001 stone.

Well considering the last post from Scooter is over 6-7 months ago, I assume Scooter has gone on to other things, I will give you the same answer and that is the electric fuel petcock if you have eliminated bad fuel. He never indicated if he checked it out.

My 2000 Jackal did the same thing.......fuel pump was cavitating and sending all kinds of air into the fuel injection system which led to the lack of power and backfiring. Change out the junk gas cap...it's not venting properly. I believe that MG Cycle has the replacements. Also break out a good volt-ohmmeter and (with a lot of patience) get the T.P.S. ranged in really good. The difference is amazing. I run a K&N filter in a modified air box top, Stucchi H-pipe and "relieved" stock mufflers. I also have removed the emission cannister system. The clue to listen for is a gurgling sound evident that the fuel pump is not comming up to pressure and won't stop running. Good Luck!

I just read a similar complaint in one of the motocycle mags. The suggestion was to go for a ride with the gas cap off or loose. If the engine runs fine, it is a gas cap venting issue.

Help here too...MY V11 Sport idles well tears off when  i give it throttle but spits and backfires on deseleration..until i'm back at idle...then ok...what gives????

Air leaks in the exhaust?

Also, when was the last time it was given a full service/tune and who by? Do they usually work on Guzzis? Do they have even 1/4 of a clue what they're doing?

Pete

PS, bad spark plugs are so rare as to make me doubt that the above diagnosis was correct. While obviously plugs can be 'Bad' it's so rare nowadays as to be incredibly unlikely!

"Bad" can also mean it ought to have been replaced 10k km before, no? ;) And while bad plugs may be rare, plug caps can go bad too and I presume that gives very comparable symptoms.

Not working well under load - could that be a compression issue?

Fuel injected Guzzis do not vent through the gas cap. There is a separate vent line to the tank with a one way valve. That one way valve is know to cause problems. Most just remove it and throw it away.

Thanks guys..glad to hear some advece...plugs were changed twice..i'll check caps though, and exhaust leaks...also where is that venting ball check valve? I took off tank for first timeand saw that there were two small hosesthat were disconnected from the corresponding nipples..could these bae a p;roblem?Bike runs fine at speed and at idle..Must look into TPS thing...Bike is stock and clean.no major work done.Yet. Haad valves adjted and BMW shop tried to sync TBs....said they couldnt because of how it was running...Dont know if they knew Guzzis that well..

 Cant believe i didnt check my spelling...on last post...
Another thing i was thinking...if bike runs strong at speed..that eliminates a lot of the bigger things like gas pump, filter. petcock, valves, mmm or it would not run as well..not the same problem as the one earlier about not being able to move off idle...

Thanks
Bob

Wow..I'm in awe of this forum..it works great and is full of features!! Next ime I have money I will contribute. :!:

For the one way valve look at Tab 24, item 6 in this parts manual http://guzzitek.org/parts_list/gb/1100/ ... 8GB%29.pdf
