Valve adjust question (loud valves)

Picked up my '07 Griso with under 2500 miles on it. Previous owner had Steelhorse Classics do a fluid change, valve check, inspection as a condition of sale. $400 later and everything should be OK. I have the service work order copy and valve adjust on on there.

The left side 'clicks' louder than the right side at idle. The right side is what I would consider normal or below normal valve noise, but the left side sounds louder than it should from a general observation.

Would you open it back up and re-check? I am not familar with Guzzi valve noise, so I am asking here...at least it isn't as loud as my Super X...that thing sounds like it has ball peen hammer tappets.

It is probably fine but since it is so easy to check and I highly recommend Guzzi owners getting to know their Guzzis I would check them.

is there a valve adjustment how-to somewhere on here (I'm sure there is)? Any special tool needed? I'm still waiting impatiently for delivery of my griso from cali. :(

I think I did a photo-essay on the 8V didn't I? the 4V motor is essentially exactly the same but with 4 fewer valves, thassall.

Well, decided to do a check...the quiet side were all tight, very tight. The loud side had a loose exhaust gap. All jam nuts were tight. The bike has less than 200 miles since the service was performed prior to my pickup.

A little time and care later and the bike is now quiet and sounds the same on both sides.

I see more bikes have noisier left cylinder head than the other way round. My G8V’s left head also considerably noisier than the right one. It is merely coincident or there is a reason behind it :?:

Excellent reason to do them yourself.

I'd do it myself normally, but the condition of sale was the owner would get the bike serviced which included getting a new battery/fluids and show it was running. It wouldn't turn over at end of auction.

We are all good now, but it kind of annoys me when someone pays for a service and it isn't really performed (at least to my picky satisfaction-per the manual). My friend who assisted in the sale is normally a hard core Hinkley Triumph rider. He was VERY interested in the Stelvio NTX after dealing with my Griso and the dealer this was serviced at. He was not happy to hear about the valve issue and is somewhat leary new since he had heard nothing but positives about that dealer. I told him not to worry too much about it, so I doubt it was a deal breaker. We will see.

If you are listening from the rider's seat, (part of) the difference may be because the left cylinder is closer to your head (it's offset more to the rear). Otherwise, I can't think of a reason.

Good one moto

The longitudinal offset of the left and right cylinder is equal to the thickness of the con rod big end, about an inch I guess. I don’t think that will make a difference, at least to the human ears.

I have tried listening to the cylinders when I am off the bike, the left jug is definitely noisier than the right one. Whether it is slanting on the side stand or upright on a bike stand doesn’t make a difference.

I am not bothered by the noise as the magnitude is still within the reasonable range, just curious why the left jug is louder than the right jug.

awesome, and thanks Pete. I saw the 8v writeup, but I didn't know if there were any real differences in the 4v. That'll be the first thing I do when it arrives.
