Still weeping

This subject has been covered several times but I still haven't sorted it. I have a continuous oil weep from the tiny drain hole on the left cylinde. I have replaced the spark plug tube and fitted new seals. I have put extra seals down the outside of the plug tubes ans siliconed them in so I'm reasonably confident that there is no oil getting down that way. I've checked all around the head to ensure that there are no other leaks on pies etc and fitted new rocker cover gaskets, even though these wouldn't actually cause this problem. I've read about 'porous heads' and so suppose ths could be a possibility but does antyone know exactly where the porous areas have been on the heads that have been changed. I'm as near as dammit out of warranty now and to be honest with the lack of consideration I have received from the dealer in Denbigh over the spokes issue, I wouldn't hold my breath on having it repaired under warranty anyway.

Further suggestions anyone?

Ian

Ian if it's sttill under warranty what about taking it to Orrell motorcycle centre, theyre just up the road from you and as far asI know are still guzzi agents. They would be obliged to sort it, it doesn't have to be the supplying dealer to do warranty jobs.

I had this issue when my '09 Stelvio was in it's first week with me. Turned out that the O-ring beneath the cam-chain tensioner cover had a small chunk missing. You might want to check that.

The most difficult part of all this was that my dealer had to cannibalize the O-ring from another Stelvio which was waiting for the cracked-fork replacement.

Cheers Mohawk, I've just checked that one out and it's fine, the oil is definately coming from down around the plug tube area.

Thanks for the link. I may check the small welch plug near the exhaust valve,I'm sure it isn't the oil pipe and I'm pretty confident it isn't the plug tube.

Ian

When you say you've added 'Extra seals' can you explain how exactly? the tube is sealed top and bottom by o-rings. I can't see how you could add another form of seal.

Using gorila snot on the o-rings is unlikely to help. Use a bit of rubber grease and nothing else and make sure the tube is still round.

The small welch plugs near the exhaust valves are for the cooling galleries. The are I believe loctited in with something fairly serious and the amount of oil through those galleries is substantial. If one was starting to leak I'd expect it to rapidly become a flood!

While it is possible that you have a porous head casting I have to say it is probably unlikely. The o-rings sealing the tube are still the best bet IMHO.

Thanks for the advice.

I replaced the plug tube with a brand new one and two new seals lubed with rubber grease and took the bike out and it still leaked so I returned and with the plug tube in situ pushed two more thinner O rings down the gap between the tube and the casting followed by a nice neat run of silicon. I replaced everything and ran the bke again for a few days and sure enough oil started to weep from the drain hole again. I thought maybe it was just residual oil so cleaned everything up and ran her again. Once again oil started to weep out of the hole. My next move was to pull off the plug cap and look down the plug tube, absolutely no signs of oil anywhere but still the oil leak from the drain hole continues.

I've genuinely run out of ideas, I can live with the slight weep but it really would be nice to have an oil tight engine before I travel down to Spain this summer.

Cheers

Ian

Just wondering if there is any burning oil smell associated with the weep - you replaced the rocker cover gaskets and it fits properly?

Turtleman

Thanks Turtleman, yeah I replaced the rocker cover gasket and no leeks whatsoever from there, the porous head is looking more likely.

Ian

It's back again & I've finally sussed it. There's absolutely no oil around the plug tube joints or round the plug or either cooling port. The oil is actually leaking from the inside of the tiny drain tube. Looking inside the head with the rocker cover off you can see that the tube is actually a tubular casting and it must be that which is porous or cracked. i'm just out of warranty so I'm bolloxed there. My plan is to insert a thin walled metal tube if I can source one and epoxy resin it in place, that should strengthen the cast drain tube whilst leaving enough of an orifice to still drain. well that's the plan, many thanks for the suggestions fellas.

I hadn't heard that but am not surprised, they couldn't sell Guzzis so moved them all up to Millenium. My bike came from Denbigh and they are no better, they still haven't resolved the spokes issue, I feel a GS1200 coming soon.

What makes you think a GS1200 will give less trouble? One of the reasons I got the Stelvio was because of the apparently large number of quite serious problems those bikes were having, (also I didn't want to be part of what seems to be a fashion started by Ewlie McBorman :D )
I feel that BMWs are no longer the top quality product they once were, I've owned several over the years and spent many years riding them in a professional capacity, like most products these days I think BMW are definately building down to a price. I had six good years with my GS1150, but there was no way the saleman at Southport Superbikes could persuade me to swap my 1150 for the 1200. One of my pals who recently bought a Stelvio is quite friendly with a BMW motorcycle mechanic/technician, this bloke told my mate he would never own a modern (i.e. those built in the last ten years or so) BMW motorcycle as he thinks they no longer have the quality they once had.
I think the main problem we have here in the northwest is piss poor Guzzi dealers, some of whom may as well be selling washing machines. If we had just one good specialist Guzzi dealer we would be well sorted. If my lotto ticket were to come up I'd be tempted to open a Guzzi shop, I wonder what sort of a salary would tempt Pete Roper to work in sunny Lancashire. I bet there would be some right old ding dongs with the cantankerous antipodean :D
Anyway Ian I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment with your bike, I do hope you get something sorted.

Fatal you're absolutely right, it was a moment of madness contemplating a BMW, I actually had an R1150R & the constant surging of the engine pissed me off. The Stelvio is going to Spain come what may, It's also doing the FarmYard party in a fortnight. My missus reckons the Stelvio's the best bike comfort wise that we've ever had.
