Had the bike nearly 2 years, and while doing an oil change today I noticed the whole sidestand assembly is loosely mounted... Never paid any attention to it before.. is it supposed to be this way?

Are you talking about where the bracket bolts to the engine?

If so, no it should not be loose but many have found that this happens. Normally people find out when the bolts drop out so you're ahead of the game.

TIghten it back up with a lock washer and some locktite and you should be fine. Normally this requires you to remove the left side exhaust pipe.

It is not... they are notorious for coming loose. Fix it now before your bike ends up on its side. It does require removal of the left side header pipe (only), but it is not tough to R&R. You may have lost the bolt, so be prepared to purchase another.

Thanks for saving me from embarassment! (then again the last bike i dropped was not because the sidestand didn't work, it was because I forgot to put it down... )

No lost bolts just loose bolts, now with some loctite to hold them. The lower of the 2 doesn't feel very good when tightening but the threads look ok.

Yes,

The side stand bolts on the 1200 Sport will loosen and fall out. I had just gotten off a friend's loaner 1200 Sport, and after lowering the side stand and dismounting, the bike fell completely over on the left side. I didn't even have time to grab it before it hit the pavement because I was taking my helmet off and both hands tied up.
There was the bolt and washers lying on the ground right underneath the bike.

Keep a check on the tightness of the bolts and follow Todd's advice.
