'09 vs. '12 Griso 8V comparison

Good day!

n00b here - just getting my feet wet regarding Guzzis.

I initially wanted a Stelvio, but things never seemed to click - '09s were more my style, but the tanks were too small for me [and some melted, I think  ]. The NTXs are nice, but I never get off pavement, so they're somewhat overkill.

Then I saw the Griso 8v...ah, ciao bella!

So, I'm doing some research on the Griso. I love the '12 Griso 8V SE. But new bikes aren't usually my thing - I like to buy used/cheaper. But I don't know enough about the '09 year-model, as 1st-year models aren't my thing, either.

I'm not usually this OCD [ :D ]; in my world, the research can sometimes be almost as fun as the purchase.

In any event, how do the '09s stack up against the '12s? I love the SE paint scheme, but I've seen a white '09 for sale and the white paint scheme really works for me, too.

It's my understanding that the Guzzis are some of the most easy-to-work-on bikes available. This is good, because if I can swing a purchase, I won't be able to afford to pay someone to do my wrenching for me - and there will be a learning curve.

And, as a bonus question: has anyone mounted aux. lighting on the front of a Griso? It might break up the beautiful lines, but I commute and in CA we can lanesplit - which is mostly safe, if you throw enough trons [light] downrange. So, this is something I'm also very interested in.

[Edit] A second bonus question: no ABS brakes, correct? Coming off of an ST1300 w/linked ABS brakes...I was somewhat spoiled. Any chance it will be offered on future year-models?

Anyway - great site, and I look forward to lurking and picking up as much info as possible before I whip out the checkbook.

Thanks!

Bikeless,

What year ST1300 did you have? I've never owned one but always thought they were awesome motorcycles. I think some of the early 8v's had a cam follower recall. Pete will likely straighten us out on this but I don't think there has ever been a single problem with any of the 8v's after having the update kit properly installed. I also think it was a fairly small VIN range that had the suspect parts. I purchased my 09 white Griso 8v from Jim Barron at Roase Farm Classics in Woodstock, IL last May. I don't have many miles on my G12 but the engine is very quite and as powerful as can be.

All the best,

Mark

I had an '06 ST1300A - that year the bikes were black. It was a great bike, but I could never get the ergos sorted.

In any event - sorry to bother you all - I sat on a Griso at Munroe in SF today, and there's no way, short of extensive farlking, that I'll fit well. I'm 6-1, 235-ish, 34" inseam, and it just seemed tight to me. Obviously, the bike works for guys bigger than me, so it must just be me.

I sure wanted to fit the bike - that is one beautiful ride, and I'm jealous!

Off to Stelvio-land, now. Cheers!

Bikeless.

Interesting, I am 220lb, 6'2" with a 34" inch inseam. Fits me like a glove. The pegs are a little higher but you can drop them an inch or so with aftermarket.

I"ve got a 36" inseam and only 160lbs. First couple hundred miles were a bit tight but with a couple thousand miles under my belt now it the bike and I are coming to terms. Not saying that will work for you, especially after you spent so much time with the ST, but it's possible.

...nuts. I just saw the thread about peg lowering. 1" or 2" might really make "the" difference for me.

Sure is a beautiful bike.

So, any differences between the '09 and '12? Availability of ABS? Fewer issues with the CARCs?
