Griso buzzes on and off for hours after coming back from a ride and turning off. Sounds a bit like a small bee trapped under the tank. Even after it goes quiet, a slight touch can make it buzz again. Is this normal ?

No !

Try opening the fuel cap to see if this eliminates the buzzing. Also pulling the relays under the seat one at a time.

at first I thought it was the immobilizer reacting to movement or some kind of pump going on and off but now i'm thinking it may be related to pressure building up in the tank and being released periodically. when I open the gas cap it makes a whoosh sound. If i close it for a minute and open it again, there is a whoosh sound again. So the pressure is building up on its own without the ignition even being turned on. the bike hasn't buzzed for 20 mins after i released the pressure.

hmmm... the hoses and valve seem ok as far as I can tell. I am thinking about ripping out the canister. May or may or stop the buzzing but it seems it needs to come off anyway.

I removed the evap and the one way valve on my 06 Griso several years ago when it was doing the same. All went well, no more noise, no adverse affect to riding.
Go for it :)

ok then, canister and valve are history. Bike is running fine, perhaps a bit smoother but it's hard to tell. Buzzing sound is gone.

After I removed the main tube (that goes to the valve) from the canister, I blew air into it and the valve made the same buzzing sound I was hearing earlier. At that point I knew this surgery was going to work.

Also, when I removed the valve from the tube, I could hear air gushing in for about 3 seconds. So the valve was definitely creating a vacuum in the tank. No more whooshing on opening the gas cap.
