For all you that have completed this ride- any pointers? I am planning to take this route with my start point originating in Monterey,ca.

on the way back to Monterey- I will take 101 south.

So are you planning on going by Alice's then too? I've done that area just a few small handful of times, so not sure what I can be of help with... outside of it's pretty rockin'. Perhaps someone from the area will chime in, but only suggestions I can make is to watch the weather forecast. If you have extra time, 236 is interesting and question back to you, is Empire Grade paved?

Monterry North on hwy 1. North to Santa Cruz. Don't take 17 right or you wind up at my place in San Jose.

Once thru the interchange look for a quick right for hwy 9. Look for a sigh to Boulder Creek. that's 9. Take 9 thru Felton. Lookout for wandering hippies.
9 tees into 35 (I think). 35 is Skyline. take 35 left (North-ish) to the end. 35 tees into 92.
turn left on 92 to Halfmoon Bay. Take to its end. 92 tees inro highway 1. turn right on 1 and ride past the airport (look for Eddie Andrini's planes and someone doing stunts ).

Take 1 up thu Monmterra, over Devil's Slide (you'll know it when ya see it  ) Pacifica and wind up in San Francisco.

a great detour I like is once on 35 Northbound look for Alices. that is 84. instead of donating at alices turn left and ride down to La honda and drink yer brains out at Apple jacks :p . Check out the local zainiees. look for the local famouse folk (Niel Young maybe?) Apple Jacks is a REAL HOLE IN THE WALL joint. But it makes a great stopping place to hydrate (or dehaydrate).

Once hydraulically balanced leave apple Jacks left and 84 tees into hwy 1. Turn right on 1 and ride up into Half Moon bay and up to SF.

Have a great trip. could get cold. could be fog. I'd go but we are in Panama right now.

Alex

If you haven't gone already...or for future reference....when you get to Boulder Creek, heading North....take a left on 236, Big Basin Way. I wanders through the redwoods to the State Park, and goes right through - just keep going past the ranger station/parking area. It will connect you back to Hwy 9 before Hwy 9 crosses Hwy 35, Skyline Blvd.
